These factors include, but are not limited to an individual’s family background and upbringing, education, social surroundings, income level, and mental condition. The goal of the due process model is to find ways to help offenders change their behavior or turn from a life of crime. This model also looks for alternatives and diversion programs that help offenders, who commit crimes and violate the law because of drug usages, alcohol abuse, and other social ills, instead of sentencing them to jail or prison. Supporters of these rights also believe that individuals have the right to protect and defend themselves. Most conservatives argue that there are already too many gun-control laws in place.
