Creon represents the tragic hero in Sophocles’ Antigone through his believes in choosing the state over his own family. Creon chooses the state over his family multiply times and doesn’t realize the consequences. One example that Creon chooses the state over his family is when he is talking to his son Hamion. During this time in Thebes Greece in 441 B.C woman was not to question male authorities. Woman was just strictly to do as they are told. In that society it would be normal for females to not question male’s higher authority. Creon said “For they are woman, and even brave men run / when they see Death coming.” Creon states that even though they are women they can sense danger coming. Also, Creon means they have knowledge to try to escape the roots of death. That is just one example of how woman were belittled in their society. Another way Creon displays his masculine ruling system is by when he states “Let’s lose to a man, at least! Is a woman stronger than we?” Creon is insinuating that if he is going to be wrong about something it couldn’t be towards a female. Creon would rather take a lost to a male than to a female. Creon believe that because of all the power that he had that the gods would side with him. Creon thought that would make his actions right. He wasn’t aware that his actions to not bury Polyneices would cause so much pain and problem in his life. He realizes it wasn’t the right thing once Teiresias told him that the gods wouldn’t have like that decision and the gods would punish him with the crime. Also Choragos convinced Creon to go bury Polyneices to make up for the wrong doing he have done. Creon listened to Teiresias because Choragos said “The old man has gone, King, but his words / Remain to plague us, I am old, too, But I cannot remember that he was ever false.” That meant that Teiresias was credible and wise to many people around the city. Creon then wanted to change his actions in the pass by doing right in the present. Once he decided to take Choragos advice he told him to “Go quickly: free Antigone from her vault / and build a tomb for the body of Polyneices.” Creon wanted to make it right but needed other people help to realize that it wasn’t the right decision at first. Although Creon wanted to change his actions when he arrived he realizes that it was too late for him to try to fix the multiple situations.
