Daltyn watched Sterling saunter across the room after coming in the house. “Jer is in a talkative mood today. He wouldn’t shut his mouth the whole ride to school.” He smiled his cheshire-cat smile and sat unnecessarily close to her on the couch. “His name is Jericho, not Jer. You are not my father, nor will you ever be, so you don’t have the right to call him Jer.” Her hands formed into defensive and protective fists, but they stayed glued to her side. She wouldn’t dare to purposely hurt someone.
She sat there wishing that Sterling had that same mentality as he set his hand down on her upper thigh. “No matter what we call him, he’ll still be gone until 3:35.”

You can’t love me.” She tried to take her hand back, but he held it tighter. Not a painful type of tighter, but the type of tighter where she knew that he needed her.
“Fine. Then I like you a lot.”
She looked away from him. “You shouldn’t. If you were smart, you would just leave.”
“Well, then I guess I’m a fool.” He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. “You can’t get rid of me that quickly, darling.”
Daltyn blushed and looked into his chocolate brown eyes. “Okay. You can come, only if you stand by the door. If you hear that I’m in trouble, then you can come in and play hero. But, if you die, I’ll kill you.”
They got out of the truck and walked to the door. Zaiden pulled her into a hug before letting her go inside, and she was surprised to somehow feel safe again in an embrace besides her father’s. She hadn’t felt safe in a very long time.
Daltyn opened the door and stepped inside the old schoolhouse. She was immediately hit with a musty old smell that reminded her of a cheap antique shop. Dust covered everything in sight, and lighting was minimal. She reached up to turn on a lamp, but met instead a spider web and was greeted by a very large and very terrifying spider.
