Yosemite

When I was seven, my family and I entered the enchanted forest known as Yosemite for a campout. It seemed as trees decided to invade the barren Earth. As I stepped out of the car, the smell of sticky, brown sap running down a maple tree smashed my face like an arrow pinning its target to a barrier. The sap threatened to suffocate me with it’s sulfurous smell.
The next few days flew by as fast as a falcon catching its prey. Until we were going to play in the river. “Whoohoo!” I screamed as I heard what we were going to do. In the water, I felt like I could do anything. The water was like my second home. “Yipee!”I exclaimed as my body slammed into the ice-cold water. I hit the water and a jolt of electricity shocked my body. My face

There I was sitting in an old 2006 Honda Odyssey driving up to my cottage on Lake Michigan. I had already been in the car for 4 hours and I was only halfway done with my journey. I didn’t know if I was going to survive. I was already missing my Lucy (my dog), and I had to live without for a week while the ferocious neighbors took care of her.…

Close call on Current River In the small town of Popular Bluff, Missouri, sun was brightly shining down on this hot summer morning, making it the optimum day to go tubbing down Current River. That morning there were about eight of us going tubbing, my stepfather Larry, two uncles, an aunt, my sister, my two brothers and I. We loaded up the car with the essentials that would be needed; then we loaded up into two vehicles and headed for the river. When we finally arrived at the water’s edge my brother John and I were so excited, we basically leapt out of the car before it came to a complete stop.…

The thing about drowning and not dying is that it makes at least a memorable story. My reason is great for how awful it is. I went under in the St. Lawrence River because I was too stupid to recognize my limits. Like any sane person, I do not wish to be in that position ever again. That mistake will not be made a second time, considering I would be dead.…

It was a gloomy day. I was at our Subdivision’s Local Beach getting ready to swim out to the raft with my four friends. The “raft” as we called it was the bottom end of a Pontoon Boat anchored in the center of Dollar Lake. Occasionally the rain and winds blew it. When my friends arrived we dove into the shallow end of the beach and acquainted our bodies with the cold, late Summer temperature.…

Freezing water gushed into my lungs, stabbing my insides with what felt like broken glass. I suddenly couldn’t find the strength to move. My mind began to grow fuzzy, like I was about to succumb to the release of sleep.…

Being out on the lake was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. It was like being at the top of a rollercoaster waiting for the first drop, the heart-squeezing plummet to certain death that was never quite fulfilled. I never said no to a day on the water. “Race you to the buoys?” My best friend is one of those girls you love one second and want to choke the next.…

Sleeping peacefully in her bed, Laura was cradling a pillow to her chest. The sun was beaming through her blinds causing the woman to stir. Usually, waking up was a simple task for Laura; she was a morning person after all. She groaned when the first beam of sunlight hit her face. Picking up her alarm clock on her nightstand, Laura looked at the time.…

A Sunday morning in early August arrived, and there was not a sound in the house. No alarms set, no one needed to be at work, nothing. It was not too long until my dad had awoken and woke my brother and me as well. “Wake up, wake up, we need to go enjoy the lake before the storm!” he shouted.…
