Creative Writing: Willie's Gone

“It’s better to be a has-been than a never-was,” I told Pete as we loped back on defense. Pete had been jocking me non-stop since our pickup game started. I had had enough.

My greatest and only claim to fame is scoring 102 points once in a high school basketball game. That’s right: two more than Wilt Chamberlain. But that was twenty year ago. Still, at least I had that. Nobody else out here on this court could say as much.

Willie died last month.

You never heard of Willie. Hell, people who did know him didn’t think he was much. But he was my friend, a gentle giant who deserved better than what this life gave him. I don’t feel much like playing basketball anymore now that Willie’s gone.
