Updike’s “A&P” I am in A&P with Diana and Gen because my mom asked me to pick up some snacks. I am tired of her telling me all the time what can I wear or not. So I decided that we will just wearing our bathing suits. I feel everyone's eyes on me, and I like it. I just want to break with this conservative society. I like myself, I like my body, so why do I always have to hide it? I convinced the girls to come with me because I want to show everybody that we can dress however we want ; we are free.
Right now we are at the bread area, and the girls are whispering to me that there are two guys at the checkout area looking at us. Gen and Diana feel uncomfortable. I am saying to them that they have to be proud of their bodies. I do not find the jar of herring snacks that I am looking for. I continue looking for

I turned and I saw an old man. He looks like the store manager. I feel that I blush a little bit and I say to him, “My mother asked me to pick up a jar of herring snacks” (Updike 203).
“That’s all right, but this isn’t the beach” he replied (Updike 203). I feel myself blushing more, but I am not ashamed. I am getting angry with him. “We weren’t doing any shopping. We just came in for the one thing” I said (Updike 203).
“That makes no difference. We want you decently dressed when you come here” He answered me (Updike 203).
I can not believe what he said. This is the kind of mentality that I hate. “We are decent” I said really upset (Updike 203).
“Girls, I don’t want to argue with you. After this come in here with your shoulders covered. It’s our policy” He said before turns his back (Updike 203).
Right now, I just want to leave, while the cashier gives me the change. I wonder how long it will be until women can dress like they want to without being treated like criminals.
We are leaving the store, and now more than ever I know that I have to continue fighting for my

In the articles, “In Defense of Liz Lemon” by Emily Nussbaum and “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hannah Berry, both discuss how women can choose to step out of the typical stereotype on how women should be portrayed and be who they truly want to be. For centuries, there has been an unspoken code on how women should act, dress, and behave. However, through the years women have started to step out of those roles to embrace who they are truly are. Considering that women are becoming more powerful and successful than ever before, one would have to agree that women no longer stand in the shadows of men in the workplace or at home. Women are now becoming more comfortable in who they are by showing their personality and confidence in the way they act, dress and communicate to others.…

I have decided to write this journal article on an article that I found online that speaks directly to experiences that I had throughout middle school and high school. The article is titled, “The Sexism of School Dress Codes”. A young girl named Maggie Sunseri noticed that the dress codes in her school were geared more directly to girls than it was to boys. At first, Maggie rightfully saw this concept to be unfair. The rationale that the administrators gave behind this idea, however, was even more upsetting to Maggie.…

The short story “A&P” by John Updike utilizes motivation in a unique way to drive the story forward and affect other elements of the story. The protagonist is a teenager working a cashier job in a supermarket during the summer, in a place where you wouldn’t expect to see people walking around in provocative outfits. The literary devices of the story are affected by the protagonist’s motivation, and the motivation also makes him a very believable character (thanks to a variety of factors that we’re able to glean about the protagonist). When it comes to the girls in the story, the reader can understand why the protagonist’s attention is drawn to them even without his motivation. The girls are miles away from where it would be appropriate to be wearing such swimwear and walk into the store without a second thought (as it appears to the reader).…

"A&P" is a short story by John Updike, the story is basically a coming of newness story where the protagonist Sammy acts a childish decision that he trusts is a mature thing to do. He demonstrates his inexperience from his judgmental attitude. For instance, when Sammy continually mentions to the customers like “the ewes are walking with shopping trolleys along the aisle,” (748) implying that they are uncritically happening each other and that they are not intelligent. In addition, when he refers to his partners’ stances approaching the girls, he seems to blame them, but he forgets that he also does do the same thing, for instance, when he observes McMahon “estimate their joints, he says he feels sorry for the girls (748)”. Sammy innocently…

Lately, I have been pondering on the harsh dress code rules. When did my shoulders become something I should be ashamed of showing? When did it become a secret that girls wear undergarments? Admonishing girls for letting their shoulders or bra straps show is the most ridiculous form of dress code. Dress coding this harshly can promote negative feelings about their bodies, when they already feel bad enough.…

Characterization in John Updike’s “A&P” Characterization is an important element involved in making a story appealing to readers. In fact, because of this reason, characters are often the hardest to create. In John Updike’s short story “A&P,” there are several characters- such as Sammy, Queenie, and Lengel- that are used to describe how a conformist society is interrupted by a nonconformist one. Each character played a viable part in relating fiction to life.…

My AP Literature teacher, Mr. Mercer, once asked my class a serious question: why do women apologize so much? A thoughtful pause followed while the class, females especially, pondered the answer. My teacher elaborated with a short anecdote about a female student from a previous class: Mr. Mercer was standing in front of the doorway before class, speaking with another student. The female student approached the doorway so Mr. Mercer and the student courteously moved out of the way. The female student nodded and uttered a quick “sorry” as she hustled past them.…

"As much as I could stare at that body of yours all day, the object at the mall is to not draw attention to ourselves. " The man located what he searched for, and straightened to hold up a waist-length white trench-coat, "So, I want you to wear this. Don't worry, even if no-one else thinks it sexy, I still will." The MI6 agent ruffled her hair, as a parent might do to a child, then, with a twinkle in his eye, deposited a peaked Manchester United peaked cap on her head, and snatched the keys for the Honda from Sky's grasp. "If you've a pair of sunglasses, put them on as well.…

Everyone wants to feel good in the clothes they are wearing, whether it’s for a job interview, a special event, or simply every day. Feeling good in what we’re wearing is the first step in feeling confident. In the 2016 documentary Suited, producer Lena Dunham explores this idea of building confidence through well-fitting clothing as she follows six individuals as they get fitted for suits at Bindle & Keep-a tailoring company based in New York City. But Bindle & Keep isn’t just any tailoring company. They have become known for catering to the LGBTQ+ community, specifically the transgender and gender nonconforming portion.…

In the world we live in, everything is different. Difference in relationships, difference in the way people dress, and even a difference in the way people talk. A difference I see that seems to stand out in the world is the difference in females. There are two different types of females in the world: there are ladies and there are women. Some may not see the difference in a lady compared to a woman, but there is a huge difference between a lady and women.…
