Trapped

You’re trapped in your mind. Nowhere to go. You don’t know how you got here and don’t know how to get out. You try walking, but it only leads into emptiness. Everything is white. It seems as if everything has a slight glow to it. You don’t know who put you there, all you know is your name. Your thoughts seem to echo out, yet you have no voice. You feel helpless, and you have no idea don’t know what to do. You sit down. You’re consumed by loneliness. You imagine a pathway appearing. You blink. You’re now standing on a pathway. You start walking again. This time you feel like you’re getting somewhere. You imagine the sky. A stretch of blue appears above you. You imagine the ground. Earthy material spreads out from the path you’re walking on. You imagine the sun, plants, animals, everything important is filling up the blank canvas that was your mind. You feel accomplished, your thoughts have meaning now.

You remember everything, as if the memories have always been there, but you’ve never been able to reach them. Overwhelmed, you start running towards your family faster, a sweat breaking out. You’re so close. Just as you’re about to reach them suddenly everything changes and you’re underwater. Your feet and hands are shackled to a rock. You try getting free but nothing is working. You thrash around, trying to get free of the chains. You hear something beeping but you choose to ignore it and focus on trying to get free. You can feel your oxygen running out, trying to hold on as long as possible. You’re about to close your eyes when suddenly you’re in a white room. You hear the beeping noise again. You look to my right and see a heart monitor. You notice the large amount of people around, all whispering with their clipboards close to their chests and glasses as far up the nose as they can go. You’re confused, how did everything just happen? you

My books felt like weights beneath my left arm. I sluggishly made my way over to the door, put my hand on a cold silver handle, and deserted the solace of the common room. I was already halfway up the flight of stairs owing to the common room’s elevation, but I didn’t want to finish journey. Each step represented a new obstacle: a hard test, a bad day, or a tough loss. I had already climbed my way through third form and most of fourth, but the metaphorical steps ahead looked too imposing for me.…

I feel nothing and take a few more steps forward, becoming more confident in my stride. I don’t know where I’m going, but at least I’m going somewhere. I’m still walking forward when an ear splitting creaking noise forces me into a crouch, my hands covering my ears. It sounds like steel pipes scraping against each other, like an old mansion shifting under the pressure of standing for so many years, it sounds like these things but amplified an infinite number of times. The sound is coming from everywhere at once, I feel like it’s even coming from inside me, from a dark place I didn’t know existed until right now in this moment.…
