The Fire
I remember that day well, I was in the house as usual and I heard the Finch children playing outside in the snow. That was the first snowfall in Maycomb that had occurred in many years. I wished that I could go out and play in the snow, I wondered what they would do all day. Surly they would try to make a snowman, but their was not enough snow for that. To my surprise I saw them making a little man, out of dirt, he had a strong resemblance to Mr. Avery. Then the brought basket loads of snow from their yard and Miss Maudie's yard. They plastered their dirt man with snow. It looked so much like Mr. Avery that they put Miss Maudie's gardening hat on it’s head, and hedge clippers in it’s hand. As the sun dipped below the horizon the mercury dipped well below freezing. It was the coldest night that I can remember. It was the kind of cold that wormed its way through the most miniscule cracks in the walls, and crawled up under your doors. The temperature near the fire was well above 50 degrees. I noticed that the finch kids, Scout in particular were shivering, they were well outside of the radius of her provided by the house. With everyone’s attention on the house I thought that it would be safe to venture outside and give Scout and Jem a blanket to keep warm. I went deep into the house to retrieve a blanket. It was pitch black, but nights spent navigating the house in the dark provided me with the knowledge to make it to my room without bumping into anything. Finally my hand closed on something soft. I turned around and retraced my steps. When i arrived at the front door, I took a deep breath turned the knob and made my way down the overgrown front

Set shortly after the civil war and the start of the great depression in the small fictional town of Maycomb County, To Kill a Mockingbird depicts the struggles of the Finch family as their reputation is bruised and battered for defending a black man in a still racially prejudiced court of law. The Finch family must overcome challenging obstacles through this rough period but in doing so they evolve as people. The antiquity of this book falsely makes it seem as if modern day adolescents will struggle to identify with the characters, despite this, the journey of adolescents throughout the novel such as the ever-evolving Jem Finch give an insight into the importance of building character for both adolescents in the past and present. Jem Finch…

Would you want to shelter our youth from America’s flaky history and instead tell them lies about what happened when a black man couldn’t go to school with a white person? That’s what could happen if we stop reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. If it is still taught in schools the children of America get to experience the novel’s great life lessons such as not to be so quick to judge people, the novel’s great characters, and the superb symbolism in the book. To Kill a Mockingbird should still be taught in schools because it teaches the reader some great life lessons. For example when Atticus was defending Tom Robinson he said, “Simply because we’re licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us to try not to win.”…

Because the community of Maycomb works together to solve issues and builds a supporting environment, the community should be viewed as a lost time and place worth celebrating rather than a prejudiced neighborhood. This manifests itself many times throughout Scout and Jem’s daily life, especially when Miss Maudie Atkinson’s house burns down. Most of the town had comes to see what is happening and help, and when Atticus realizes even Arthur had left his home to understand the commotion, he says, “‘Looks like all of Maycomb was out tonight, in one way or another. ’”(81) Atticus means that most everyone had left their homes and precious sleep to come to Miss Maudie’s house.…

I would prefer to spend my time outside in the yard tending to my azaleas, or sitting on my rocking chair on the front porch, or just about anywhere but cooped up inside my big old barn of a house. I see so much of Maycomb through spending most of my time outdoors. This little southern town is drowsy and tired, although there seems to be nothing to be tired from. There’s nowhere to go and no one to meet, everyone here already knows everyone.…
