Creative Writing: The Worst Day In Mississippi

Improved Essays
These cold November days in Mississippi are miserable, and i think 1931’s school year was the worst year i’ve ever had.. It had been a long rainy day. I got home from work and began getting some food ready for the children as well as some towels. They all came home soaking wet from them dang buses. The children had to walk to school everyday. Little man didn’t like it because he hated to get dirty, and the buses with all them white kids would think it was the funniest thing to drive extra fast to splash the black kids walking on the side of the road. The only thing they could do about it was get to the bank before the bus got to the them and splashed all them black kids.

I grabbed some carrots and took it over to Cassie and the boys, before i walked into the room I heard whispering, I stood at the door and listened.
“Little man we can’t tell ma” Stacy whispered in a serious voice. Little man started to say something then i walked into the room. They all froze. I offered them some dinner, but all them stayed silent. I put down the crops and asked them if they wanted to tell me anything. Little man began to talk but Stacey shut him up. I accepted that they didn’t want to tell me, so i left the room. I shut the door behind me and as i was walking away, I heard little man start whispering “If we don’t tell mama we can get caught.”
Cassie responded saying “little man if ma finds out it was us who caused the bus to crash she will beat us and tell the night men. That is when i realized what has been going on. I didn’t know what to do, so i walked back to the kitchen and ate with big ma. I knew if i told big ma she would make sure the night men knew then everyone could get in a lot of trouble. I looked at the newspaper to see more about the incident. When i read that them night man were on the look out for who caused the incident I rushed to the children's room, and that is when i knew that they should know that i knew what they did. I knocked on the door hesitantly. Then told them i knew it was them that caused the big crash.I then began to speak, “ How’d ya’ll do

You guys could've really hurt someone you're lucky that ya’ll didn’t get caught. I grabbed the whip and went back to their room. I felt real bad whipping them but i had to, so i whipped each of them. Then we all talked about how we need to keep this a secret and they can’t tell ANYONE. They understood why this was such a big deal, and they came and ate dinner. I told the kids that i thought it was a little funny what they did, the white kids deserved to see how it feels to walk to school everyday. The night men never found out and the kids and i were so relieved and a little happy that them white kids got to feel how it was

It gets stupidly hot in Danielsville, Louisiana, especially around summer. This would be fine I guess if we had something to do, to keep our mind off of the heat but there isn’t anything to do. Danielsville, Louisiana has three churches (Pentecostal), twice as many bars, one high school and no books stores or libraries. This means you’re either too drunk to read, or too Christian to read anything good. Big enough to have a mayor’s house, but not big enough to be on any map of any kind, it’s the kind of town where everyone knows your name and basically everything about you.…

Napoleon Michigan is a fantastic place - to be from. A four-way stop sign in the middle of the state, if you blink you may miss it. As a kid, the insignificance of the place doesn’t matter. On Monday night about 8 o'clock, I reached the guard, about 100 people passed it and went towards the custom house where the king's money is lodged. They immediately surrounded the sentry posted there, and with clubs and other weapons threatened to execute their vengeance on him. I was soon informed by a townsman their intention was to carry off the soldier from his post and murder him. I immediately sent a non-commissioned officer and 12 men to protect both the sentry and the king's money, and very soon followed myself to prevent, if possible, all disorder. Nay, so far was I from intending the death of any person that I suffered the troops to go to the spot where the unhappy affair took place without any loading in their pieces; nor did I ever give orders for loading them.…

I'm miserable. I have not recorded anything for a time, despite making an attempt to avoid wasting what is left of my time in this wretched trench. Some nights back a cloudburst happened which left both sides basically fallen. As luck would have it did not hurt anyone but creating it very difficult to fight. Nowadays I think of these trenches as holding cells for prisoners, the site I am guaranteed to spend the remaining months of my life in until i am eventually exhausted and then we are killed like some pack of mice in laboratory experimentation.…

Inside America's Most Dangerous Year Round Job It was just before 9:00 on a rainy Autumn morning as I drove up the muddy gravel drive of Baker Logging on the outskirts of Manchester, Tennessee. The outside of the green metal building appeared fairly new, as I walked in, I noticed the smell of lumber faded to a mixture of grease and pumpkin spice candles. It was almost as chilly inside as it was outside, only dry. The desk was full of paperwork and behind it sat Mr.Baker. He appeared almost as I had pictured him, only cleaner.…
