The door swung open, bathing the kitchen in early morning sunlight. Maddy looked up, her attention diverted from the apple she had been slicing. She walked slowly to the door, wondering if she could have failed to pull it shut properly after retrieving the newspaper earlier. Cautiously, she stepped out onto the spacious porch in order to get a full view of her front acre.

Everything looked exactly as it had when Maddy had walked to the middle of the long driveway to get the paper. There was not a soul around, not even a deer or a fox, thus she had no explanation for her growing sense of dread. Not for the first time, she wished she had gotten around to adopting another dog. It had been two long years since she lost her beloved Axl to a snake
