The President's Plate

Joyce’s family was gathered around the table to celebrate her special day. Today, Joyce has turned five years old. After summer, she will go to school with the big kids.

“Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday, dear Joyce!”The family sings loudly and off-key.
“Sto Lat!” Busia sings. Busia is Joyce’s grandmother.

Busia cuts the cake. She puts a piece of cake and a scoop of ice cream on each plate. “The president’s plate goes to Joyce. Happy Birthday, sweetie, may you live 100 years.”

The president’s plate is very elegant. It has gold trimming around the edges. Busia had a lot of nice plates, but this one was definitely the most appropriate for a president.

“Busia, why is it called the president's plate?”
“I’d love

I would love to have dinner with George Washington because I want to hear about all of these accomplishments and how it was like being the very first president of the United States. George Washington was the last soldier standing out of 86 soldiers. He was also the only surviving soldier of the militia army. There seems to be a story that described him as “bullet proof president”, and that is what interests me into meeting Mr. Washington. During his lifetime was called “father of his country.”…

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

There was low-toned talk among the troops. The officers were impatient and snappy, their countenances clouded with the tales of misfortune. The troops, sifting through the forest, were sullen. “Wait… I was under the impression that all infected areas been quarantined at this point,” Governor Lewis proclaimed. Everyone at the table kept their mouths shut, as they felt an intensity that would soon escalate into power struggle steadily increasing. “Governor!” Hanes said, sternly as he raised his voice back at Lewis while pounding his fist on the conference table. “This sickness has covered two major cities, several states, scores of counties, and a myriad of townships and municipalities throughout the northeastern corridor in less than a week.…

Bullets whizzed overhead hell-bent on hitting their targets. James pressed himself against the mud wall of the trench, as if by doing so it would take him away from the corner of hell that his old naive self had willingly entered. Allied planes tore through the open sky with kamikazes right on their tails. Gaping holes left in the ground by heavy artillery were full with stagnant water and the rotting corpses of dead soldiers, their weapons bent and rusted displaying a haunting past that time wouldn't forget.…

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…

I walked up to the entrance of the evacuated home. The house could have been an enchanting two-story house; with its ivory framed windows, and front lawn. If it was not abandoned and lifeless, maybe this house would have been the dream house everyone fancied. But it's lifeless and boorish, just like the carrion of Timothy Woodsen. His body was no longer there, but the evidence was.…

August 21 - I woke up extra early today so I could go arrange something with the cooks. Nobody ever has any fun round here, so I thought we could do something a little different for Larry’s birthday. By the time breakfast started, most people were already in the cafeteria, Larry was given an extra biscuit with a single, reused candle. Larry was pretty embarrassed. We were all laughing when some of the older men tried to sing Happy Birthday, but forgot half the lyrics.…
