Jessica's sandals clonked over the wood planks of the walk as she made her way quickly past the small shops and restaurants. She stopped in front of the Beach Emporium, the largest clothing store in Sandy Hallow, and peered into the window. A hand-painted sign read: Bikinis Half Off. Jessica chuckled to herself. Was that meant to be a joke? No. Mrs. Hopping, the quiet old woman whose family had owned the Beach Emporium for a hundred years, had no sense of humor. She was a stern, unfriendly woman who smiled only when punching down the buttons on her old-fashioned cash register to ring up a big sale. Mrs. Hopping will soon be smiling a lot, Jessica thought. Just beyond town, Beach Haven Drive was already clogged with cars as the summer people were arriving to open up their beach houses. In a few days the white-skinned tourists would be lying on the sand all day, soaking up the rays, then jamming the tiny town at night, all pink and sweaty, eager to party and shop, shop, shop. …show more content…
A very bright orange bikini caught the light. It probably glows in the dark, Jessica realized rolling her eyes. How tacky.
The sun had disappeared behind the low, shingle and clapboard buildings along Main Street. The evening air carried a chill from the ocean to the east. Loud voiced and laughter rang our from the Pizza Cove restaurant across the street. It's exciting, Jessica thought. A new summer. A new season. New people. Sweeping her thick mane of copper-colored hair back behind the shoulders of her black cotton sweater, she pushed open the door to the shop. The bell on the door jangled as Jessica stepped

“Wait… I was under the impression that all infected areas been quarantined at this point,” Governor Lewis proclaimed. Everyone at the table kept their mouths shut, as they felt an intensity that would soon escalate into power struggle steadily increasing. “Governor!” Hanes said, sternly as he raised his voice back at Lewis while pounding his fist on the conference table. “This sickness has covered two major cities, several states, scores of counties, and a myriad of townships and municipalities throughout the northeastern corridor in less than a week.…

A series of small waves pressed the sail boat against the alge dock as his cold and cracked hands desperately yanked on the rope in an effort to raise the sails. Dark clouds had moved in the night before and had stayed overnight providing a refreshing sprinkle of rain every now and then. He looked out over the vast plain of unsettled water and saw one individual white cap rise up among the rest only to be pushed back down. Due to the lack of sunlight the frigid water appeared black and lifeless but he knew that below it was a complex community of different species. He then bent over the side of the boat and reached for its securing ropes.…

After putting on our bright pink leotards and ballet shoes, which trust me we're not the most fashionable, we went out to the car to wait on Dianna’s mom. I should mention it was still raining as if the earth would flood outside, this made it slightly hard to hear but we ran out to the car anyway. Me, Dianna, and Dalton bolted through the door, sprinting to the car that Dianna had unlocked with the small remote. The cold rain made the humid, hot day not feel as bad as the rest of that summer had been, which was dry and hot. When we got into the car we sat for a bit but then Dianna decided she wanted to turn on the music so she jumps to the front seat of the car.…

The tangy sea breeze of the early morning filled the room with the aroma of salt and fish. As Debbie woke up she looked at the sea blue curtains on the right side of the room, the sun shining through made it resemble a waterfall. Just above the bed on the ceiling, a beautiful mermaid with sunny blonde hair swam above her. An orange starfish smiled over her shoulder. This was her safe haven and waking up in her room at her dad’s shore house always made her smile.…

Anne Hathaway’s Garden, a place of seemingly everlasting beauty and history, was one of the stops on my first trip to Europe. My high school offered a travel club for students to travel somewhere of their choice, and this year I was able to finally fulfill my dreams of visiting Ireland, however, along with Ireland came a trip through Wales and into England. This was how I came to be in Anne Hathaway’s garden. Our travel club, which only consisted of myself and my teacher, was joined by students from North Carolina and California.…

I shrank back --but the closing walls pressed me resistless onward. At length for my seared and writhing body there was no longer an inch of foothold on the firm floor of the prison. Jada entered her bedroom, flicking on the light and unwrapping the wet towel from around to her body. As she walked by the mirror on the left, her profile revealed the burgeoning form of a young woman, someone who looked much older than the 14 year old girl reflected. The purple bikini clinged to her flesh and goosebumps spread over her arms and stomach as the air conditioning blew down from the vent above on her cold hair. Tossing the towel across her vanity stool, she reached up with both hands and untied the elastic that bound her hair while her eyes caught the site of Brody across the street.…
