Creative Writing: The Night Trail

Improved Essays
The air was crisp and cool. The sky was a deep shade of purple that signaled night was setting in the sky. There was no illumination of this land other than the shimmering moon and the warm, eerie glow from the apartment buildings scattered among the fields. In the fields themselves, insects buzzed and chirped, hidden deep within the underbrush. In the soil, prairie dogs scrambled fervently, navigating their tunnels in search of a nighttime meal. On the edge of the fields, a deserted path lay silently, awaiting a wandering soul to come upon it. It did not wait long. Two lonely travelers ambled beside the fields, seemingly oblivious to the land around them. The path took notice to them immediately. It called the travelers closer, longing for …show more content…
There were winding twists and turns, dead ends, and potholes littering the trail, making it nearly impossible for one to navigate what lay before them. Neither traveler realized how long they had walked, or that with every step they were merely walking around in circles. What they did notice though, was a blinding set of lights tearing through the field from a source unknown, merely feet from the direction they were facing. Both travelers froze as the light passed them, fearing who, or what, was behind the lights. Their fears were only fueled when the lights rested upon them, the unmoving, blinding orbs of light that blinded anyone, or anything, in their paths. They quickly sprinted past the figure into the uncharted area of the field to the west, narrowly escaping the figure’s grasp. As they ran further and further through the field, a street came into view. It was a paved road with streetlights, along with the occasional lonely car rolling past the fields. The travelers were overjoyed by their newfound discovery of an escape route, but the feelings soon faded, as there was a rather large obstacle in their path. A long, deep, foreboding ditch ran along the side of the field, blocking anything from running onto the street. There was little time to figure out a solution, as their pursuers were only a few feet behind. In a split-second decision, the eldest traveler hoisted the other in the air, and flung the writhing body across the ditch. The body hit the ground with a thud before getting up and running down the street in search of safety. The eldest barely made it past the ditch, hitting the side with a thud before climbing the rest of the way out onto the street. The travelers quickly caught up with each other on the road and slowed their pace to a jog, feeling calmer under the glow of the streetlights. “What just happened!?”, whispered the youngest traveler. “I don’t know, but it's not over yet.” Replied the other. They both looked back in unison to see they were not safe yet. Their pursuer, along with two
