Creative Writing: The Lanista

Daylight seeps in through the cracks under the door, as well as the voice of my lanista calling to us to wake up. “Up, all of you, get on your armor and get outside! Tomorrow the lot of you go into the arena, and I better have impressive results for the Emperor. I have bets on this, and I better come back richer.”, says the lanista (slave owner). The lanista approaches my door and says, “You better train, Mevia, Emperor Winter wants a good spectacle from you. The crowd isn't expecting to see a female fight, and you will be fighting to the death against an animal to make it ‘fair’. Emperor Winter explicitly said to have you trained to entertain, and I must give the people what they want. I don't expect much of a fight from you, but a lot is …show more content…
It is beautiful, the most beautiful thing I could ever see, but knowing how people are murdered there makes it a little morbid. It is completely made of stone, it has beautiful arches, statues, and molding that is curved along the whole building. The lanista calls, “Come on, it is better to get underground before the crowds arrive. And you, I don't want anyone to see you before your fight. It is going to be a special, and secret surprise.”, so I made my way underneath the arena. There is a maze of stone tunnels and chambers, and echoing down the halls I can hear the roars and growls of numerous beasts, one of which I will fight and kill. There are about nine tall, and muscular men (all wearing full armor that is made of metal huddled together forming a strategy on how they will fight together against another group. “Mevia, you will be last to fight. Oh, and make sure you make yourself look better before you come in, the audience would rather have a pretty gladiator.” shouts the lanista as he walks through the tunnels and into the arena. Why should I make myself look better if I’m only going up there to murder. I couldn't care less what the audience thinks of my appearance, all they want is a good killing. Although, they may want to keep me around if they like me, hmm. Now I'm starting to hear the footfall of 50,000 people walking into the arena’s spectator sections, and then the shouts of the people as bread is thrown to them. Bread and Circus, bread and circus. That is all this is for them, a meal and a day of fun with the family. They don't see it as murder, all they see is their entertainment. Do they not care that people are being murder, or simply ignorant and can't process that it is wrong. I guess, as long as they are happy, and safe, they don't care what is going on around them or within their government. One, by one the men or groups of men are transported up, the crowd cheers for

“ You're an idiot, Henrik. ” Below a grey sky, Gordaldo stood outside the flyboat, sighing at Henrik's tangled predicament; it was the only thing Gordaldo could do for his companion imprisoned for breaking Duke Roth's nose after a heated argument. “ Onward, to your assigned stations, ” Then Lichtenberg—the royal soothsayer and leading theurgist—issued an order which spurred the armed forces underneath his authority into marching toward the city center. Customly, Gordaldo obeyed as did the other soldiers with the unthinking, automatic swiftness of a machine; they walked shoulder to shoulder weapons in tow, wearing black armor branded with a wolf bearing a broken sword. And thus, the partially ruined settlement filled with concerted steps of armed men and their beasts of warfare and blaze as they secured roadways, buildings and removed obstacles from their path.…

They referred me as ‘novicius,’ which was what all the new recruits were called. After being assessed by the Lanista, I was checked by the doctor or Medici. Being a Retiarius meant that I relied on speed to win the gladiatorial games. I had to wait…

When I was a child, I was terrified of the dark. I still am, but back when I was around six years old I couldn’t go a full night without crying out for one of my parents to search beneath my bed or in my closet for whatever monster I thought was waiting to eat me. Even with a light on, I would still see dark shapes moving around the corners of the room, or strange faces looking in on me from my bedroom window. My parents would do their best to calm me down, telling me that it was just a bad dream or a trick of the light, but in my young mind I was positive that the second I fell asleep, the monsters would get to me. Most of the time I would just hide under the blankets until I became tired enough to stop worrying, but every now and then I would…
