The day began to die, and the men started the long walk to their death. Geb led the two men to the gallows on the mountains overlooking Sentinel Point, unaware if he was dreaming or awake. As the chief executioner to Lord McRoss it was his duty to carry out the sentences passed by Lord McRoss, however cruel they might seem. However, his mind had been playing tricks on him lately; but he was quite sure he was awake right now. Both the guards were young, probably having just completed their training, and had the snake and sword of House McRoss on their shields and armor. Geb was told that their names were Overton and Owain. However, he was not sure if that was what their names actually were, or if he had made up their names in an effort …show more content…

“Guards!” Geb shouted as he cut the noose to let the man crumple to the ground, “Quickly!” The guards rushed to him as Geb showed them the man, now bleeding through his eyes. Overton grabbed the man by his legs and ran down the gallow stairs. The other man, whose name Geb couldn’t remember, rushed down after him sword drawn. Geb followed the second man down and saw that the prisoner, a fat, sandy haired man, oozing a black liquid out of his skin. Overton had laid the man on the ground and was wiping the man’s blood with his tunic.
“Leave him, he’s not going to make it,” the other guard said drawing his knife.
“NO!” Geb shouted, and attempted to tackle the guard. He would save this man, even if it meant giving up his life. But just as he was about to hit the guard, Overton jumped and shoved Geb, causing him to smash into the ground. The other guard lept over Geb and slashed the man’s throat, if you could still call him a man, most of his lower body had dissolved into the thick black liquid and his face was covered in blood, and the piteous screams

Whether blatantly stated and actively convincing, or subtly incorporated and subconsciously compelling, every author has a purpose. To entertain, to teach, to persuade the reader to take a stance or to take action – every author’s purpose is unique, rooted in his or her own values and experiences. He used his story to reveal the truth of the tragedy and hardship experienced by the migrant workers of the 1930’s, through the combined employment of a moving plot and purposeful rhetorical devices. The story elicited a surprising reaction from all its readers – both those directly affected by the migrant workers, and those disconnected from the issue.…
