MAMA Where you been at, Walter?

WALTER You’ll never believe who I just heard from.

MAMA Tell me where you been all this time.

WALTER See, I just got to walking and eventually wound up at that place Tito works. I ain’t sat there more than 5 minutes until Tito comes over tellin’ me I got a call. I pick up the phone and they’re sayin’ they found Willy Harris, ain’t that something? We can get our money back!

MAMA Who called you?

WALTER Mama, Bobo called me. He can help us, we can live in that white folk’s neighborhood you like so much.

(RUTH, MAMA, and BENEATHA sit with each other a while, not saying much)

RUTH(Quietly) He might be able to get our money back, Mama.

MAMA (Mournfully) We shouldn’t have let him go alone.

RUTH For Heaven sake, when does this worrying come to an end?

(RUTH exits)

BENEATHA I wish we could just get away from this place.

MAMA What you talking about? You wanna just run away and leave all your worries behind?

BENEATHA Exactly. That would be nice.

MAMA Ain’t no use in moping around, you know that. Haven’t I taught you anything? That’s not how it works, things ain’t gonna fix themselves.

BENEATHA I know Mama, I know, it can’t hurt to wish though.

(WALTER enters. Night has fallen since his last arrival, though his expression is of the opposite.)

MAMA Son?

WALTER Yes, Mama, I’m back. No need to worry, you should be busy packing!

MAMA Well, what for? We have no money, we have to stay in the apartment.

WALTER (He takes a filled envelope out of his pocket and waves it) There ain’t a thing left to worry

BENEATHA (Stunned) Wait, how?

WALTER It don’t matter how, all that matters is I ain’t never making a deal with Willy Harris again; not in this lifetime. Where’s Ruth at? She needs to start packin’ too. (Shouts) RUTH!

(RUTH enters)

RUTH Walter Lee, what are you shouting about? (She stops abruptly when she see’s what’s in his hand) What’s in that envelope?

MAMA (Bluntly) Oh, I think you know!

BENEATHA All of Dad’s money!

MAMA A new place was needed anyhow, but now that we got my husband’s money with us… (Her voice quivers as she starts to tear up) He worked hard for us. We can live in a new home because of him.

(RUTH and BENEATHA hug her)

RUTH Looks like things worked out after all.

(TRAVIS runs in the room)

TRAVIS The moving men are here!

WALTER You better believe it!

RUTH We haven’t even started packing!

MAMA Yes, and if those white folk aren’t too eager to welcome us, we can save up for a new place while we’re staying there.
