Almost your turn you’re on deck standing in the little dirt circle. Waiting, wondering what coach is going to have you do. Your up and taking warm up swings put one foot in the chalk looking at the coach put other foot in examining the field to see where the right place is to hit the ball and standing there waiting for the pitch taking the first pitch to see how she throws now you're ready waiting for the second pitch leaning back hand back standing watching the ball as it goes around looking for the snap coming from the fingertips. The balls coming in right down the pipe trying hard not to lean to get it, getting excited just thinking base hit all I need to get my teammate home to get a head, ball gets in the perfect spot swings the purple and white stick BANG! Hit right in the gap the outfielder chasing the ball to the fence. I’m rounding first hearing coach yelling “Go two! Go two!” Moving my legs and feet as fast as possible sprinting. Knowing I can’t get out have to help my family out. Getting down and dirty, dust spinning all around keeping my foot on the base wondering what the ump is going to say. Safe? Out? Which one is it going to be. Calling it out “safe!” Letting out the big breath that you're holding
