I was there when it started, when they attacked. It was October 27th 2027, I was 15. I saw the whole thing happen, never in my life have I felt more helpless. I watched the machines activate under the white house doors. We thought they were here to help us, we were wrong. I watched those glowing red eyes that were full of hate and no remorse, it was at that moment when we all realised that something was wrong, very wrong. I watched it turn towards the president's daughter I began to hesitate and began screaming, the machine fired blowing an 8 year old girl's head across the White House walls. The book Blown to Bits by Hal Abelson, Ken Ledeen, and Harry Lewis has often given me the impression that this book was intended to warn its audience of the many dangers of technology, and that the benefits of using technology are not worth the risks. The book’s third chapter, “Ghosts in the Machine,” however, was different, because I noticed that the authors were just giving information about things that computers do that people may not realize, but not necessarily implying that all of these abilities are dangerous or harmful. The first topic discussed in this chapter left me with feelings of both concern and relief.…

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

My first child had just been born in August and it was her first visit in grandparents’ house.…

“Wait… I was under the impression that all infected areas been quarantined at this point,” Governor Lewis proclaimed. Everyone at the table kept their mouths shut, as they felt an intensity that would soon escalate into power struggle steadily increasing. “Governor!” Hanes said, sternly as he raised his voice back at Lewis while pounding his fist on the conference table. “This sickness has covered two major cities, several states, scores of counties, and a myriad of townships and municipalities throughout the northeastern corridor in less than a week.…
