Riley perched herself on the edge of the cabin bed, absentmindedly following routine and pulling on her combat boots, thick and heavy, ready for fighting. Moonlight was seeping through the gaps in the blacked out windows; there was a gentle spring breeze making its way through the log cabin walls. She was small for her age of 14 but she had strength and speed on her side. Riley could hear the other campers singing around the campfire and the subtle smells of burnt sugar from the marshmallows being roasted outside. Being in confinement wasn’t that bad for her because it meant that she got a lot of alone time to be able to plan in peace; it also meant that none of the staff or other campers noticed when people came to visit her after hours. …show more content…
They were quiet, thin but clearly had muscle work and were strong; they always stuck around within their family groups too, always talking with low enough voices that Riley couldn’t hear. There was something about how they all looked similar; tightly stretched skin over their faces with a sickly pale complexion. The thing about them that worried her most was their eyes, all were rimmed with red and a look of pure hunger; a longing for something that clearly wasn’t too far away… just what was the question. It was something she couldn’t quite put her finger …show more content…
All the late night runs and weapons sparring with Alec for the past month was catching up with her.

Over the past five years Alec had taught himself not to show his emotion – surprise, affection, hopefulness, hurt. Ever since their parents had died when out on an assignment in London, visiting the academy there. “I know I’ve been hard on you this past year, harder than any brother should be and I’m sorry. People didn’t know what to do when our parents died. Obviously everyone had to keep training us otherwise what we were born to do would be wasted.”
“You don’t have to remind me of our duty to kill demons in this life brother.” Riley said, “We solely exist to protect humans who can’t save themselves. Death is a natural consequence in our line of work and I’ve accepted it. I won’t fail tonight, I have a legacy to uphold to make mom and dad proud.”
“If anything doesn’t go to plan tonight then call me over, understand?” There was a tone of pride in his

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

“Wait… I was under the impression that all infected areas been quarantined at this point,” Governor Lewis proclaimed. Everyone at the table kept their mouths shut, as they felt an intensity that would soon escalate into power struggle steadily increasing. “Governor!” Hanes said, sternly as he raised his voice back at Lewis while pounding his fist on the conference table. “This sickness has covered two major cities, several states, scores of counties, and a myriad of townships and municipalities throughout the northeastern corridor in less than a week.…

A single creature could cannibalize itself, the heal damage until the natural end of its lifespan. If they have a natural end point to their lifespan. On Monday night about 8 o'clock, I reached the guard, about 100 people passed it and went towards the custom house where the king's money is lodged. They immediately surrounded the sentry posted there, and with clubs and other weapons threatened to execute their vengeance on him. I was soon informed by a townsman their intention was to carry off the soldier from his post and murder him. I immediately sent a non-commissioned officer and 12 men to protect both the sentry and the king's money, and very soon followed myself to prevent, if possible, all disorder. Nay, so far was I from intending the death of any person that I suffered the troops to go to the spot where the unhappy affair took place without any loading in their pieces; nor did I ever give orders for loading them.…

I only watched helplessly as the turquoise vase wobbled off of its shelf, seemingly falling in slow motion until it hit the cold stone, erupting in a firework of glass. He swiveled his head around, eyes widened, pale face, and trembling hands. My hands automatically went up to clasp my mouth, muffling a scream that never came out. He looked at me, and I looked at him. I looked at him, and he looked at me.…

It's a rainy day, of that kind of thunderous rain that digs your cheeks when, needlessly, you seek with the nose a cheekbone of sun. It's a day, this one, in which the rain seems not to find peace, and it collects inside the hands' baskets of beggars and spreads over the din of roundabouts, when the road is a long canvas punctured by irregular splinters of sky, disturbed by gargling traffic and tires and nervous girls with wet skirts on the sidewalks. I observe the rain while the street narrows at the foot of a kilometric residential facade beyond which there exists nothing, a one-dimensional militarized front that declares us Cold War, littered with windows fragmenting the mirror image of the opposite trench, that which, pigeonholed, also…

Lilly walked down the hospital ward to see her brother, who was still unconscious, thanks to his concussion. Bandages covered his right eye and most of his head, leaving his left eye, mouth and nose as the only thing that could be seen on his face. His body lay as still as death, hands over his chest, a tube in his throat, to feed him when necessary. Lilly shivered at the sight of her injured brother, so still, unlife like. He seemed like an object instead of a kind and loving brother that she knew him as.…
