She very loudly and distinctly said “Girls it is time to get up,” as she flipped on the light which at that time seemed more like a giant spotlight than it did a normal room light. I rolled over and mumbled just five more minutes. Mom being a mom she said “No we are already running late.” She always dropped us off at our babysitter Kolby’s house, which seemed at that time that it was in the middle of nowhere, before she went to work. The lady would not let my mom through, so with me still screaming bloody murder in the backseat my mom was yelling “My daughter just broke her arm and we need through now.” The lady still was not sure about letting us through, so my mom said some choice words and went through anyway. Luckily there was no other cars coming. We made it to the Emergency Room. They gave me some medication for the pain, took some X-rays, and set my arm before putting it in the cast. I thought it hurt bad when I initially broke it, but I realized a whole new pain when they set it back. They then put me in a cast that went around my thumb all the way up to my shoulder. The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

“Wait… I was under the impression that all infected areas been quarantined at this point,” Governor Lewis proclaimed. Everyone at the table kept their mouths shut, as they felt an intensity that would soon escalate into power struggle steadily increasing. “Governor!” Hanes said, sternly as he raised his voice back at Lewis while pounding his fist on the conference table. “This sickness has covered two major cities, several states, scores of counties, and a myriad of townships and municipalities throughout the northeastern corridor in less than a week.…

Bullets whizzed overhead hell-bent on hitting their targets. James pressed himself against the mud wall of the trench, as if by doing so it would take him away from the corner of hell that his old naive self had willingly entered. BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…
