Tenek the Martian and the Study of Earth “Hey, Tenek! Come look at the new spaceship that the company just bought. It’s so amazing!” Fleebie exclaimed from outside of the observatory. Tenek took a peek out the door and said “Yeah, it’s got some nice rocket boosters and it’s got a nice shape to it, but if you’ll excuse me I need to get back to work. I’ve got to finish my report of what I’ve found out about Earth.”
“Oh, what’s the big rush?” Fleebie asked whimsically₁. “You know that you want to take it for a spin.” She jiggled the keys in her hand. “It sounds really tempting Fleebie, but my report is due tomorrow and I’m not even close to being done.” Tenek said heavy heartedly. “Mr. Neddis just doesn’t know what too big of a project this is, especially for the short

That would be going against some of our most important rules about not going too close to a planet that we don’t know enough information about. It’s simply too risky.” Mr. Neddis objected.
Tenek shifted in his seat. “Ok, I understand Mr. Neddis. I don’t know if you are aware of this or not, but the power is out at the observatory. My electrical telescope won’t work without power. What do you want me to do?” Tenek asked nervously.
“I don’t care what you do, just as long you don’t take that spaceship and you get that report done.” Mr. Neddis said with a strict voice.
“Yes sir, I’ll do what I can.” Tenek responded obediently. Which seemed to please Mr. Neddis. “Good, that’s just what I wanted to hear Tenek.” He hung up leaving Tenek still wondering how he was going to get that report done. Fleebie who had been standing near by in the dark room eavesdropping, decided that was the right moment to say “You should still take the spaceship. He won’t ever know that you took it.”
Startled, Tenek said “Fleebie! You can’t just sneak up on someone like that. I’m not going to take the spaceship because Mr. Neddis said that I can’t, so that’s

In Edgar Rice Burroughs’s story, “Under the Moons of Mars,” there are many instances of both fantasy and science fiction. When the narrator is describing things, he talks in a very scientific way. When describing a creature from Mars, he tells the reader, “the feet themselves were heavily padded… (which) is a characteristic feature of the fauna of Mars” (151). This is the way a scientist would talk about an animal, not the way a layperson tells someone about what they saw. The narrator also talks about the environment around him in a scientific way, saying, “my muscles… played the mischief with me in attempting for the first time to cope with the lesser gravitation and lower air pressure on Mars” (150).…

Scientific advancements not only improve our quality of living but divulge a myriad of previously unknown aspects of our world and more importantly ourselves. Despite its seemingly endless list of benefits and marvels, technology, like anything else, has a seedy underbelly of undesirable consequences as displayed in The Martian Chronicles. From early in the novel, the rockets used by the astronauts are described in terms of their fearsome ability to change their surroundings. In the anecdote titled ¨The Locusts¨, “The rockets set the bony meadows afire, turned rock to lava, turned wood to charcoal, transmitted water to steam, made sand and silica into green glass which lay like shattered mirrors reflecting the invasion, all about”(78). Merely…

In the story “The Martian Chronicles,” By Ray Bradbury, there are many new frontiers that can relate to book The Martian Chronicles, but one seemed to really stand out to me. This stood out to me because of the difference it would make in the world if we did not have it today. The new frontier is modern day space. I came up with three different reasons why modern day space can relate to the book The Martian Chronicles. My reasons are the dangers of space, the benefits of space travel, and the technology used in space travel.…

The Martian is more in line with the humanism of the Renaissance because of Mark Watney’s diverse studies. For example, as soon as the storm ends he is able to properly dress his wounds which means he has at least basic knowledge of first aid. Also, he is well studied in chemistry, which he applies to creating the water for drinking, agriculture, which he applies to cultivating the potatoes, mechanical engineering, which he applies to the rover and spaceship, and finally aeronautical engineering and physics which he uses for piloting the spacecraft and his suit when he releases the air. If he did not have fast knowledge for all of these specific fields he would have died, which in a sense is ‘bettering oneself’. Nick Watney is the perfect example…

Humans are very curious. So it was completely natural for Ray Bradbury’s book, The Martian Chronicles, tries to show us the unforeseen consequences of such curiosity, only with exploring Mars. With almost the entire Martian race being wiped out by people, it’s no surprise that humans also almost wipe themselves out with atomic warfare. The consequences of the war and wiping out of almost the entirety of all races are huge and serious. I think the main message of the book is that humans have no idea their impact on their environment, colonization isn’t always a good thing, and that some people on Mars wanted to keep it the same.…

Reading Response Recently I’ve just completed reading The Martian by Andy Weir after watching the movie. The book illustrates the story of an astronaut and botanist, Mark Watney, on Mars. Overall, the book somehow connects a lot to me. Being stranded on Mars, Watney has to be perseverant and to get through some hardships. However, it is more crucial for him to be adventurous.…

The Martian The closest Mars and Earth will ever be is 54.6 million kilometers. That has to be a bad feeling when it’s 2035 and your crew has just left you all alone on Mars. In The Martian book and movie we find out just how Mark Watney felt as he fought for his life while stranded on Mars and his strong desire to be reunited with Earth. The movie left out many important details that were included in the book, such as getting to know Watney before hopping into his journey and despite its lack of details, the movie took less time and was a great visualization of Andy Weir's words. Reading the book was more enjoyable to me because additional details were included, and I was able to use my imagination.…

When comparing the positive reaction of the aliens in The Lathe of Heaven, to the negative reaction demonstrated in The Martian Chronicles, it creates an opposite conclusions and environments in the story. Both stories contain the theme that when humanity is lost in a higher power, their world becomes chaotic. In The Martian Chronicles, the humans lost their humanity destroying the earth and their new home in mars, likewise in The Lathe of Heaven, Haber lost his humanity, as he attempted to reconstruct the earth bringing chaos. When aliens, a symbol of chaos and a presence of disturbance intersect both of the stories, the final environment and conclusion of each situation follow opposing paths. In The Martian Chronicles, the humans after destroying…

Will Durant, an American writer, historian, and philosopher, once said, “Every science begins as philosophy and ends as art.” Ayn Rand uses science and reasoning as the basis for her own belief system that she created called Objectivism; she uses her philosophy to create works of literature such as Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead that have long stood the test of time. In The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand uses pivotal points throughout the novel to illustrate Objectivism. The first major theme in The Fountainhead is the importance of the individual.…
