t would be a lie to say that Gilbert did not struggle with his mental health during the years following his diagnosis. Depression kicked in, prohibiting him from enjoying going to the gym; it became a chore after a few months. He hardly laughed anymore, in fear of collapsing, potentially harming or embarrassing himself in front of his peers. Shortly after his graduation, Gilbert took up smoking: it was his only escape from the anxiety of falling asleep on the street. After one cigarette a day became five, Gilbert realized that he was too much of a burden. To his younger brother, to his friends, and to any potential lovers. Gilbert took a final breath of smoke before flicking the butt off the edge. He propped his arms over the surface of the bridge, and stared at the black unknown of water. The street lights reflected off the snow around him, and into the water below. Gilbert took short, nervous breaths, planning out his actions. Gilbert climbed on top of the snowy surface, tears rolling down his face as his brain tried to convince him to jump. He stared at the star-less sky. No one deserves the burden. "Gilbert?" A voice called. Gilbert turned quickly. His younger brother, Ludwig, appeared from the shadows and stepped under the glow of a street light. "Gilbert, whatever you're thinking about doing, just come down from there." He said in a calm voice, putting up his hands. "Ludwig, just go away," Gilbert said in a shaky voice. "I'm alright, just go home," He dried his face with his sleeve and the palm of his hand. "It's alright..." Gilbert almost whispered. "Gilbert, please come down, we'll get you sorted out."
