Shark Teeth

“Liv, stop following me!” Pat shouts. “ I can go wherever I want to!” I clamor back. Grains of sand cave in and as I run to catch up with my older brother. Squinting my eyes at him while sneering, soon I was skipping forward. Letting out a sigh behind me, Pat decides to follow me on my tour down the beach.

After a few minutes, I hear, “Liv! Get over here.” Rushing over to him, in no time at all, I’m looking over his shoulder. A small, black shark tooth is being turned in his hand.

“I want it,” I state while lunging forward. Twisting out of my reach, Pat expertly takes the shark tooth from the sand while simultaneously taking a few steps back. “Pat, please give it to me.” I plead with him like my life depends on it.

“Tell you what, I'll keep this one and you can have the next one.”

“ But Pat…” I whine.

“Liv, trust me. I'm sure you'll get a better one.” He says as he takes off.

Halfway down the beach, almost back to where we started, I'm still sulking behind Pat. Then, right in front of my feet, is the biggest shark tooth I have ever seen. Too big for just one hand, I have to use both in order to pick it up.

“Pat,” I shout to him, “come look what I found!” Pat, already watching me, walks back leisurely.

“Who'd a thought,” said Pat.

“Mine is so much bigger than yours, Pat.” Back and forth, the shark tooth is waving in front of his face. I go off skipping back to where my parents were sitting, and then collapsing beside them with a large, content

In the viewfind of my camera, I had at last framed the one thing that I most longed to photograph, a live, in captivity lemon shark. Tangerine looked at me with suspicious, yet curious eyes, no doubt wondering why I smelled of fish, as the water was tinted a slight red. Tangerine was a stunning, powerful creature, of 11 years old, about halfway through his lifespan. Since he was a lemon shark, he had a pale, yet vibrant shade of a soft mustard that had been mixed with a softer, sandy color, which is what it felt like to roll my hand on the left side as he circled me for the fish I had in my pocket, his flesh was squishy like slime, but also had a sandy feeling to it. Lemon sharks in captivity have a lesser brightness to the shade of yellow…

Brent Lawrence Welding was at the time, in his early thirties. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and likes to think of himself as “right” because he’s “white.” an open white supremacist who covered the windows with “the south will rise” posters and confederate flags to hide the sun and showed me the barn where he made meth was the man I came to know in a span of 5 months, and was arguably the closest thing I ever had to a father figure. This known con man was my mom's current boyfriend, and after my grandmother had kicked my sister and I out during a drug induced rage my mom took us to live with her the boyfriend she had disappeared with months prior. “ I couldn’t possibly write Jaws today at least, not in a good conscience anyway,” said Peter Benchley, the author of Jaws. On the other hand, all sharks are different from each other, just like the saying “no two snowflakes are the same” I think it’s the same with sharks no two sharks are the same. However, sharks make me think because they all have their own different identities and none are exactly the same and I wish to have a baby shark sometime in my lifetime. Better yet, I would want a great white shark and when it gets big enough that it won't fit in a fish tank I will take it to the ocean and it can have free reign of which aquatic animals it wants to eat and which ones it doesn’t want to eat. Great white sharks are very unique.…
