Sanctuary
An eerie glow from the mountain range reflected in the deer’s fearful eyes as she darted frantically, leaves and limbs brittle beneath her feet due to months of drought. Sensing an avenue of escape from the smoke and embers dancing like fireflies, she headed straight toward the advancing human warriors undaunted by years of instinctive fear. The line opened, offering her safe passage and then closed quickly, charging forward towards the inferno. She ran until her lungs filled with clean, fresh air. Finally pausing to get her bearings, she looked over the rugged terrain and then back towards what was once her home.

She was so tired and the thought of a soft hay bed to lie on drew her closer although fear of the giant dog kept her looking toward the house which was dark and silent. Peering inside, she saw other animals who had found refuge from the flames, rabbits, raccoons, several squirrels and a possum all appearing very comfortable and at ease in their safe surroundings. She slowly walked to the back corner stall which was empty but fresh with hay and collapsed on her frail tired legs. She was so worn out that she did not hear the giant dog quietly ease open the door of the barn and begin making his way to the back stall, just as planned. Too late she realized he was standing in the stall door, bigger than she realized and she was too weak to jump over him. Her mind was so awash with fear of dying she failed to see the bucket swinging from his big jaws and fresh water dripping down the sides. He moved ever so slowly towards her, head down, humble in his gift of life sustaining water. He sat it before her and stepped back several feet before lying down quietly, face to the floor. She drank eagerly, almost greedily, not knowing when she would have another chance but as she looked at the dog eyes a sense of overwhelming calm surrounded her and she knew sleep was soon to follow.
