Creative Writing: Pars Regno's Ceremony

I fidget nervously, hands straightening my shirt, tucking a curly strand of hair behind my ear. They fall to rest on the folds of my skirt, my chin lifted. I and about three hundred other adults-to-be - perhaps two-thirds of them Pars, the other third humans like myself - stand in neat rows in the throne room of Queen Tenebris' palace, ready for the ceremony to begin. The rest of Pars Regno sits behind us, impatiently waiting as well. Some are tearful, for when the ceremony is over, we shall be given orders on where to go from here by the government. It may seem strange to some, but it has always been this way. The air is filled with tension, whispers carried on unseen currents.

Yes, there is an unmistakable hardness in her jade eyes, a smirk planted on her mouth, but her features are soft. Everything, from her chin, to her high, arched eyebrows, to her full lips, gives the feeling of gentleness and empathy. This is all framed by her ink-black hair, long and straight, which falls directly between her wings.

Wings! Easily one of my favorite things about her. She has no idea how I ache for my own pair. As a Parsian writer put it, "the wings of a Pars are the envy of everything that lives".

While I can't exactly speak for the rest of humankind, I definitely envy them. Large and feathered, the exact color of her skin, angled downwards. They're truly a marvel of science.

I hear trumpets play, which can only mean one thing - the ceremony is about to begin. I give Lux a knowing smile, she returns the favor, and we turn our attention to the front.

Queen Tenebris sits on a balcony above us on her throne. She is flanked by guards on either side. The Queen smiles down, a smile that seems to hold unmeasurable knowledge and secrets. As with everyone else in the government, she is Parsian, and her wings jut from her back, tips resting on the armrests of her
