When sun fall comes around I get off the ship, I walk along the dock onto the gigantic island. The first thing I see is a deep forest that is full of tall thick oak trees, the top of the trees makes it hard to see the sky. Around me seems to be all darkness at the moment I feel this menacing feeling as I walk deeper and deeper into the forest. I stop walking when I reached a stone path which I assume leads to the Cyclops’ town. I get quiet holding in my breath listening for any signs of dangers before going on.
“Be careful.” A bell like voice warns me.
I turn around backing off the path; I unsheathed my sword looking around the forest slowly I felt my eyes narrow in warning as adrenaline runs through my body.
“Who is warning me?” I ask bravely.

“I am, Odysseus and his men have been captured.” She says her angelic voice ring in my ears.
Before I could speak out, I feel a strong hand wrap around my body and I feel myself being lift up off the ground. I let out shrieks of fear, I kick my legs around as fear ran into my body. I knew if Odysseus saw me now he would laugh at me and think of me as an insubstantial fool! I squirm in the hand of this beast that has managed to capture me. I look up into its eye and deep worry settles into the pit of my stomach. Polyphemus looks back at me with a menacing look “HOW DARE YOU INTRUDE MY ISLAND?!” He bellows. I gulp back every sign of fear and try to breath as my bones feel crush in his hold.
“I ONLY ASK FOR SOMETHING TO EAT!” I shout, for some reason I felt as if I have to shout to get him to hear me. I quiver as he brings my body close to his face; right there I was close to his eye. It freaks me out how big it was and how powerful its gaze could be, this wasn’t a pleasant gaze

I instantly felt Polyphemus’s grip on my body loosen, I scream as Polyphemus throws me towards the water. I plunge into the water sinking down to the bottom of the dark sea floor. I feel the heavy water weigh me down but I push as hard as I could to swim to the surface. My arms and legs ache with pain as my muscles try to tear through the water; I felt my lungs scream for air as I kept pushing myself to the surface. I made it and I knew I have to find a way to Odysseus before Polyphemus knew I was still alive. I swam under the dock keeping my arms moving in tiny circular motions so I could keep my chin above water. I listen for Polyphemus and I sigh with relief as I hear his angry footsteps run through the forest. Who was that man? Who was the man that had managed to save me from a brutal death? No time to worry about that now, I get from under the dock onto it shivering for I was now cold. I was thankful Polyphemus hasn’t spot our ship, I ran back to the ship and went into the room where all of them were steady resting and joking around.
“Aileen!” A man slurs out. I wince as his big arm wraps around my shoulder and he pulls me next to his big sweaty body. I notice bread crumbs and wine was stuck in his dark beard. All these fools were intoxicated and oblivious to the scene that had just taken place.
“Get your arm off me!” I shout in exasperation.
The men laugh at my agitated mood and threw jokes at me, I was now

In ancient Greece, hospitality it is an unspoken rule of their culture. This theme of respect for both host and guest is carried throughout Homer’s The Odyssey. Hospitality was the glue that held Greece together, seeing as it (in retrospect) maintained order among the Greeks from different regions. The Greeks used the term “Xenia” as a way to describe the generosity or courtesy shown to strangers, no matter the condition, and creating a relationship between guest and host.…

Odysseus knows that if he does not think quick and get his crew out alive, he will die so he uses clever, intelligent knowledge to outsmart Polyphemus and prevail. Odysseus relishes that his plan to escape on the bellies of sheep worked and rejoices with his crew (480). In the comedy epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a good leader because his arrogance causes his crew members to pass away and the lack of trust from his crew makes him unable to control them. Odysseus’s arrogance leads to the death of his crew. For example, while Odysseus and his crew are approaching Scylla, Odysseus knows that six of the crew members paddling will die. However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…

With no word of Odysseus for ages, it seemed hopeless for his wife Penelope to see him once again. Stubborn and unwilling to marry the brazen and selfish suitors, she prolonged her marriage by unweaving her web. By doing so, it may have been the perfect amount of stall time for Odysseus’s return.…

Guests and hosts have obligations in which need to be fulfilled to a certain extent. The attitudes exhibited by one party to another should be reciprocated. Fortunately this is the case for Odysseus. Greed overtakes (yet again) and any good sense remaining in Odysseus and his crew is no longer evident. This chapter of the “flashback chapters” shows the abuse of hospitality by the men of Odysseus.…

Similarly to the Cyclops’ terrifying appearance and actions, after Odysseus slaughters the suitors, the old Nurse literally describes Odysseus as “terrifying” (22: 422). Now, all these similarities make Odysseus and Polyphemos sound almost identical to each other but, Odysseus is even more of a monster than Polyphemos. A common theme in The Odyssey, is nostos, “returning home,” and oikos, “home.” The majority of the epic poem is driven by Odysseus’ lack of understanding that he needs to just go home. While traveling around and destroying the homes of others, Odysseus almost loses his own.…

The Odyssey, still today, is one of the most recognized epic poems of all times. An important theme evident throughout the epic poem is hospitality. Hospitality, the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers, is very important to the gods and goddesses. It is just as important for the guest to honor the host as it is for the host to honor the guest. A violation of the expected treatment of a guest or host during ancient Greek times would often result in violence.…

Human agency is demonstrated in Homer’s The Odyssey and Virgil’s The Aeneid through the story arcs of the characters of Odysseus and Aeneas. In the Odyssey, although Odysseus’ fate seems to be predetermined by the gods, it is actually influenced entirely by Odysseus’s own choices. In the Aeneid, however, Aeneas does not possess the same free will as Odysseus; his destiny is determined by the will of Zeus. Homer establishes the independence of the choices of mortals over the preordinations of the gods, while Virgil emphasizes the control the gods exercise over the fates of mortals.…
