It was a quiet Friday at Henry’s. There were only five customers scattered around the restaurant. There was elderly couple at one of the booths quietly eating their food, two younger men at the bar chatting about their plans for the night; and one man sitting near the window and reading the local tabloids. Both George and Lennie were, in the back of the restaurant, working. George was cleaning dishes, while Lennie was trying his best to mop.
“George, I don’t like moppin’, why can’t I go back ta washin’ the plates and stuff?” said Lennie.
“Because last time you was in charge of washin’ the dishes, you bent pretty much all the silv’ware and broke five of the dishes.” said George.
“Yeah, but I saids I was real sorry. George, Why do we even have

“Because you’re too stupid to cook, and you ain’t exactly a people person, are ya? Now get back to work before I break one of these plates over your head.”
“Okay, George.” Lennie resignedly said.
George and Lennie continued their work for the next couple hours, taking only a few short breaks. George kept a close eye on Lennie, especially during those breaks. Lennie had been here long enough to know what he was supposed to do and when to do it, but he still required George’s constant supervision. The small remainder of the natural light outside was fading as the clock struck eight. George and Lenny both finished their work, collected their daily pay and walked back to their single-room apartment. The broken-down apartment consisted of a small table, one chair missing a back, another chair missing a leg, and two cots lying on the ground near the only window. There was a bathroom, but the shower barely worked, the sink constantly dripped, and the toilet was missing a lid.
“Now Lennie, We have to work two shifts tomorrow so you need to go ahead go to sleep,” George said as he was changing into a clean pair of jeans and a nice shirt.
“Alright, but why aren’t you going to

“For the rabbits,” George repeated.
“And can I pet 'em?”
“You can pet 'em as much as you want. Now go to sleep.” George said as finished getting ready to go out.
Lennie quickly fell asleep to the thought of all the rabbits he will get to pet once they get the ranch. Once Lennie was fast asleep George slipped two of the six dollars which Lennie and he had made that day under his cot and put the rest of it in his wallet. He then proceeded to leave the apartment and disappear into the night.
Hours had passed before George made it back to the apartment. His pockets were empty; his hair was a mess, and his jeans were unbuttoned. He reeked of cheap alcohol and another man’s cologne. He tried his best to remain quiet as he stumbled to his cot and went to sleep.
“Wake up, it's time for work!” George said bitterly.
“But I'm so sleepy!” Lennie said while yawning.
“We gotta go work unless you wanna be sleeping on the street tonight!”
George and Lennie proceeded to get ready walked to Henry's. Once they arrived, every other worker seemed to be staring at them in

While he laughed I asked myself, why is George laughing, was it because he wants this to be some big joke? “Then he dipped his hands in his pockets and I asked him what’s in the pocket he answered nothing childishly, but I got it out and it was a mouse, he said he found it dead, but I knew,” George continued.
