Creative Writing: Oahu's Byodo In Temple

I gathered my satchel, umbrella and notepad to start my exploration of Oahu's Byodo-In Temple. I shoved a crumpled green wad of paper at a man sitting in a small booth near the entrance. He took my money and gave me a half-smile. I found my way to the bridge that crossed a small creek of muddy, water that was swelling from the many days of rain we had in the past few days. While partially crossing the bridge, I stopped mid-stroll in amazement of the grand structure that was beore me. All of the trees nearby seemed to curl around the great building, their branches full of lush leaves swaying in the mild breeze. Three giant mountains rose up behind the structure, intimidating those of us below. Hanging low just above the mountains in a sooty …show more content…
They were conducting an orchestra so soft that only dogs could hear. This piece was the soft and light. A light breeze rustled through the trees as I ventured to a large concrete statue. He or she was slender and covered in ornaments. Their body stance was jovial, chest out and arms twisted. The face was simple with an underlying smirk or secret happiness. Necklaces made of beads, flowers and shells hung around the statue. It seemed to be a memorial, but not in a typical sense of death and sadness. From my knowledge the statue was of Buddha. Long earlobes, pointy headdress, calm smile all gave him away. The pole was short and read "May peace prevail on earth." This structure was delightful, nothing spooky about it. I walked around him or her and found myself in a sinking pile of slippery mud. My once gleaming white keds were now covered in a layer of …show more content…
Pink hibiscus blossoms hugged the perimeter of the pond like a victorian frame. They were delicate and newly bloomed from the dewy air. Glistening light covered the surface, seeming to magnify the beauty in the murky water. I met my swan friends once more and watched them follow eachother around the body of water. I had never imagined black swans to be so full of grace, white swans had been the idealogical symbol of grace and purity in my mind. Seeing these creatures, I had a change of heart. As I wandered past them, I cam upon a magnificent bell. I had heard the bell from a distance once earlier, now knowing where it had come from. The entrance to the temple grounds was ahead of me, the bridge a landmark just ahead. I rang the bell as my salutation to the temple and stepped upon the bridge one more

“Winter swans” and “Letters from Yorkshire” both focus on the natural disconnect and distance that prevail in a relationship and how it is possible to overcome in both. They use an overload of natural imagery to reflect how the relationship they have and the feelings they still have are natural weather their ones of misery or joy. Both Winter swans and Letters from Yorkshire present nature as a powerful force in a relationship. In Winter Swans it is the observation that the swans “mate for life” that brings the couple together. It is clear the swans actions have had a direct impact on the couple’s relationship as the narrator describes the swans as presenting “a show of tipping in unison.…

The neighborhood was noiseless, and the sky was pitch black, for there had been no moon on that summer morning in June. My mother and father started our car and waited for Sofia,my sister, sean ,my friend, and me to get inside. It was time to leave our dull suburban home in San Jose, and drive to the beloved National Park, Yosemite, to hike Half Dome. On the car ride there I had slept, but awoke right when we had gotten into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking outside of the window and noticing all of the evergreen trees was surreal for me, as I rolled down my window a strong smell of pine and fresh air poured into the car.…

I was over ecstatic when Fernando, (also known as Fernie) my best guy friend asked me to go on a walking adventure with him in our hometown of Kelseyville, California. We started off the day by walking in the forest alongside of Kelsey Creek. This forest has a really big meaning to Fernie and I, because we both love nature in every aspect and these walking adventures are not uncommon to us. Starting on the path we both got lost in our own thoughts, I got distracted by looking above me at the the canopy the tree branches created. My eyes followed the patterns the sunlight was creating as it broke through the leaves and cascaded onto the uneven forest floor.…

She walked down the cold, dark corridor as she felt the soft and quiet wind run her by causing her to experience an ice-cold chill that ran up her spine. It was merely past six in the afternoon, yet the eerie atmosphere made it appear as if she were standing in the middle of a cemetery at the darkest hour of the night. The hot, moisty air made her clothes and hair cling to her skin. Her hands began to shake and sweat trickled down her palms. She swore she heard someone’s voice whisper her name, but perhaps it was simply the wind.…

The sky is dark, damp, and warm, the slight red undertones are glowing through the clouds. I never expected something like this to happen in my short lifetime, Mauna Loa was erupting for the first time in twenty-five years. I watched as the ash rained down on the roofs of nearby houses, coating the entire town in what could have been perceived as warm, black snow. I felt my heart rise into my throat, causing me to choke out a dry sob. I was twenty-one, I finally had a house, and now I was going to die in this massive storm of lava and rubble.…

The town lay nestled within the hills, quiet and secluded. Trade rarely arrived from the broad river that flowed through the middle of town, and the merchants that came with them were businesslike and quiet. No one had dared to follow the river’s meandering path, nor did anyone desire to do so. And such, when Captain Tory first arrived, curious questions and rumors swirled about him. The voices of children posited simple inquiries and feverishly tangled theories while parents watched and tacitly mused over the oft-exaggerated nature of a sailor’s tales.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
