Do you know who is taking Max’s bones?” Wally responded, “No Niles, I’m afraid I don’t, but I’ll keep an eye out and let you know if I find out anything. I’m a bookworm not a bone worm.” “Thank you,” said Niles as he went about his way.”

Niles was trying real hard to find out who could be hiding Max’s bones, even worse, who could be stealing them. He asked himself, ‘who else could I ask?’ Just then Niles heard an owl hooting. He looked up and saw Ollie the Owl in top of the roof of a red barn.

“Hello Ollie.” said Niles. “Do you know what has been happening to Max’s bones?” he asked. “Hoo,” said Ollie. “Exactly”, replied Niles. “Hoo” the owl answered again. “That’s what I would like to know,” Niles answered back. Once again Ollie replied “Hoo.” “You Ollie, do you know if someone has been taking Max’s bones?” “Hoo”, said the owl. “Yes who?” Asked Niles, but the owl kept replying “Hoo?”

That’s what Ollie the Owl has been telling you. I heard him answering you hoo, hoo.” Tom was now laughing but Niles didn’t think it was funny. “Ollie was no help whatsoever so I crossed his name off of my list,” said Niles.

“I’m sorry Niles, I didn’t mean to laugh at you but I just don’t know who would do such a terrible thing to Max.” “That’s OK”, Niles retorted, “I will get to the bottom of this case.”

“Niles, I heard you were investigating Max’s missing bones.” “Yes Mollie, I am,” Niles replied. “Well I just found one behind the barn,” replied Mollie.

“How did you find this bone?” Niles asked Mollie. “I don’t know, I was minding my business burrowing a tunnel when suddenly there was this bone in my way,” she explained. “Hmmmmm, very interesting,” whispered Niles.

Bones found in the archeological dig belonged to cattle, oxen, mule, and a bear (Hardesty). The larger bones showed signs of impact (fractures) and looked like they were sawed, indicating marrow extraction for consumption. The smaller pieces of bone were burnt and calcined (oxidized or reduced) due to low oxygen burning (which occurs at the bottom of a fire) (Hardesty). Larger bone fragments were submitted to a radioimmunoassay (a method to determine proteins in bones and then match them to a certain species (Lowenstein)).…
