I’d noticed Nico staring at Reyna for weeks now. I always notice more than is good for me. Like, say, one day, I noticed Nico standing just the right distance away from Reyna that a good push would send him toppling into her. Most likely he’d hit her. So I decided to play Matchmaker. I reached diagonal from where I was sitting with Percy and pushed right between the shoulderblades. Thank you Annabeth, I said to myself as I watched what happened. “Well, get up!” She started to get up, and her brown hair rustled beautifully in the wind. The corners of my mouth twitched up.
“What are you smiling at?”
“Um…” I quickly got to my feet and forced myself to look into her deep, black eyes that looked so much like the Styx.
“Answer my question.”
“Um…”
“TELL M-”
“I like you.” I burst out my secret I’d been keeping ever seice I’d met her. “And I mean like.”
“Really?” She didn’t like me. I could tell. I could hear surprise in her voice, and was that a bit of….disgust? “The son of Hades falling in love with a preator?”
“I k-know y-you probably d-don’t like me, b-but…” I stuttered as I flailed for words and tried not to cry. “I-I just-” I was silenced by the feeling of Reyna’s lips against mine. My eyes widened. She-she liked me too. I wanted to pull away but enjoy it all at the same time. Enjoying it won out. I relaxed into her kiss, tears of joy flavoring it salty, and I wasn’t alone anymore. Thank you, Annabeth.
I nudged Percy when I saw the kiss.
“Hey, look!”
“Huh?” he looked over and saw Nico and Reyna kissing. “Ohhh…”
