Creative Writing: Napoleon Michigan

Decent Essays
Napoleon Michigan is a fantastic place - to be from. A four-way stop sign in the middle of the state, if you blink you may miss it. As a kid, the insignificance of the place doesn’t matter. What does matter are the rolling hills that collect snow, perfect for sledding. The numerous lakes, great for cooling off in the summer, and skating on in the winter. The endless woods can devour a day in discovery. It’s as you mature. Then, all energy focuses on finding a way to leave.

This change of attitude is precipitated by the lack of things to do. The nearest city with general services is a half-hour away. Napoleon boasts exactly one dive bar, three churches, only one a holy-roller type, a post office, a cafe, and a mini-mart.

Foodies not welcome.

I would love to have dinner with George Washington because I want to hear about all of these accomplishments and how it was like being the very first president of the United States. George Washington was the last soldier standing out of 86 soldiers. He was also the only surviving soldier of the militia army. There seems to be a story that described him as “bullet proof president”, and that is what interests me into meeting Mr. Washington. During his lifetime was called “father of his country.”…

By insignificant back alleys and little-trod lanes, Johnny made his way to the ferry slip in North Boston. From there to Charlestown boats were going back and forth. No civilian except only the Boston doctors, who had offered their services, were allowed close to the Wharf. It was well Johnny had thought to not put on Pumpkin’s uniform. Mrs. Bessie had been right about one thing.…

In the beginning there was only darkness. The space above the ground was pitch black with just a few stars to light up the ground below. The birds never used their wings because they found that the higher they flew upward, the darker and colder they became. All the animals in the kingdom of Shady Grove felt a big storm coming their way and so they started to prepare. The squirrels gathered their nuts and darted for a hole at the bottom of a tree stump.…

Along the Hungarian- Serbian border, hundreds of migrants and refugees fled from a temporary camp due to frustration with authorities. The camp, in Roszke, Hungary, contained hundreds of people waiting for buses to transport them, many of whom had waited overnight in the cold to move toward the border near Austria and Budapest. However, only one bus arrived, which created a huge commotion among the migrants, who were then well aware that there were no more buses coming. One Syrian man stated, “We’ve been here for two days and the Hungarian government only brings one bus?” Frustrated, some migrants made their way toward the railway line and escaped from the camp, leading to most of the others following.…

The droning of Panzer engines filled the air above the blackened battlefield of Vladivostok. The smell of cordite filled the night sky as plumes of grey smoke and dust mingled in the cold night air, drifting in between the copses of trees as if searching for a way off the battlefield. Our metal beast rolled through water and mud like a ship – clumsy, laborious and burdened, pitching and rolling in the holes and ruts of the sea of mud and snow, which was overflowing with the decaying bodies of Russian soldiers. The putrid smells of rotten flesh and diesel fumes were gut wrenching, necessitating the use of a flannelette cloth to cover the nostrils and our parched mouths. Through my viewing port, my dull coloured eyes narrowed at the sight of…

There's no use wasting time and panicking, instead, I think I'm going to find out what this FAYZ is caused by, Athena Smiths thought, and stepped outside. She could see and walk to the FAYZ boundary from her porch, and with her high intelligence, calculated the FAYZ to be 20 miles in diameter, same as last FAYZ. Then the center and cause of the FAYZ would be Theraman Lake? Theraman Lake must have toxic waste or some other form of nuclear waste.…

We left right after breakfast, a hearty serving of bacon and eggs. Elizabeth Wright had some extra eggs that she didn't want to bring along so she split it between the people in the wagon train. That only meant four eggs for us so we made more bacon to compensate. We followed the Platte River for one hundred seventy miles before we reached the California Crossing. My legs feel like they are falling off.…

It had been three days since the sun showed its full face. Since late Monday night a monsoon held Flagstaff hostage, catapulting lightening and cracking the sky into pieces. After drowning the city, thunderous clouds, arsenic grey and swollen with rain, flowed southwest in a rumbling caravan toward the desert. Beyond the door of the motel room, a panoramic scattering of downtown lights had shimmered in the passing storm, but in room eight, the darkness beneath her quilt became her hiding place. Having roused before sunrise, Gailie eyed the darkened window from her bed.…

His fingers were trailing up and down her sides over her ribs while the heels of his hands made lazy progress up her spine. Blair was jolted to the soles of her feet when his fingers brushed the sides of her breasts, plumped out against the quilt. She shifted her weight and he got the less-than-subtle message. His hands left her long enough to get more lotion. When next he began, they were on the backs of her knees.…

Everyone had their escape, and Grayson was no different. Instead of dealing with more headache and squawking financial advisers, he opted to have his captain ready the extravagant yacht to set sail. Departing from his home (which will be described later) in Miami Beach, the boat cut through the crystalline waters en route to tropical paradise further south. Grayson found comfort in the hum of the on-board motors beneath the ship, the sound of the waves breaking across the navy colored hull, and the whistle of the wind whipping around him. It wasn't long before the luxurious yacht found itself roaming between tropical islands just miles away from Key West and Cuba.…

On October 21, 2015, our class was assigned to do an observation of humanity and all living entities outside our school. The excursion was from American Indian Public Charter School II to Lake Merritt. Along the way, our class noticed that Oakland was bustling with activity. Business (stores) was overflowed with customers, local citizens were jogging, animal- life was consuming the mere crumbs on the concrete, and the Oakland Museum of California was occupied by a diverse group of possible tourists. The perpetual activity that transpired in Oakland inspired a symbol of contentment.…
