“I know,” Jared answered, putting his arms around her bulging waist and leaning his head against her hip. “I don’t know what I would have done,” she said staring straight ahead at the wall, and re-sponding to Jared’s embrace by stroking his shoul-ders. “If I’d had to choose between the two of you.” Later, that night, after they were in bed she’d give him a proper rubdown with some liniment. His back was sure to be sore from all the fencing he’d done.…

Disconcerted by Booker’s expression, Tom’s brow drew into a confused frown before realization dawned and with a yelp, he cupped both hands over his groin. Embarrassment heated his face, flaming his cheeks a bright shade of amber, and he cursed his misfortune. Once again he had made a fool of himself in front of Booker and once again, his pride lay in tatters. It was becoming an unwelcome habit, and he ruefully wondered why the universe had decided to make him the butt of its jokes. Inching backward, he grabbed his comforter off the bed and quickly draped it around his naked body, covering his nakedness.…

It gets stupidly hot in Danielsville, Louisiana, especially around summer. This would be fine I guess if we had something to do, to keep our mind off of the heat but there isn’t anything to do. Danielsville, Louisiana has three churches (Pentecostal), twice as many bars, one high school and no books stores or libraries. This means you’re either too drunk to read, or too Christian to read anything good. Big enough to have a mayor’s house, but not big enough to be on any map of any kind, it’s the kind of town where everyone knows your name and basically everything about you.…

Had been plotting, planning; and agonizing. She was already well aware of the consequence her actions would lead to, but after the event that had been weighing on her shoulders for years on end, the few seconds of relief that she would finally have after the deed was done would be all worth it.…

On October 21, 2015, our class was assigned to do an observation of humanity and all living entities outside our school. The excursion was from American Indian Public Charter School II to Lake Merritt. Along the way, our class noticed that Oakland was bustling with activity. Business (stores) was overflowed with customers, local citizens were jogging, animal- life was consuming the mere crumbs on the concrete, and the Oakland Museum of California was occupied by a diverse group of possible tourists. Edward Said, literary theorist and cultural critic, described exile as strangely compelling to think about but thrilling to experience. “The Poisonwood Bible,” by Barbara Kingsolver, is a novel that illuminates the alienating and enriching concept of exile. Leah Price, second oldest daughter of Nathan Price and Orleanna Price, from a young age of 14 learned the frustrating, bewitching and nullifying abstraction of exile, and continued to learn in her aging years. Leah Price exiles herself from her family, her home and her faith in her religion and becomes the woman she is today.…
