Creative Writing: Ivanna's Paw

Improved Essays
With the golden sunlight streaking through her honey-yellow fur, Ivanna perches on the arm of the fuzzy, slate gray couch. A beagle mix, she weighs 20 pounds and is only as tall as mid-calf. She is pudgy, with skin wrinkling up into little creases wherever she bends. Her fur is short and prickly. Her head is the size of a wiffle ball, with triangle-shaped, thin ears raised and listening. She oversees the street outside, brown eyes darting and her stout, round snout grazing the large bay window. Her front paws are set forward beneath her chest, legs straight like a pencil. Her chubby hind legs rest next to her bottom, the prominent, knobby knees bent upwards besides her rose pink stomach. Her white, doughy paws splay to either side, nearly …show more content…
Suddenly, Ivanna’s hind legs launch her upright to full height, like a spring unwinding. Standing up, she hurls her paws at the glass. The alternating pattern of right paw, left paw elongates past her head as the long nails scrr scrr down the window. Smacking down, each powerful thud sounds of a hailstorm. Her heavy, throaty holler of a bark echoes, a deep RAR, RAR, RAR. She jerks upwards with every bark, the noise shaking her as if she were going to leap out the window. Her eyes are burning brown, narrowed and glaring out at the other dog. Her teeth are bared and snapping as she barks, triangular and sharp. My mother arrives, dashing towards the …show more content…

It’s quiet, a low hum riddled with warning to the other dog if it comes near our house. Rippling through her, the base of her throat flutters. She settles back down to the couch, muscles on her legs widening and skin sagging. The dog on the other side disappears. Her eyebrows unclench, and her face loosens, teeth sheathing back into her mouth. Her head swivels back to gaze at us, eyes shining.
However, Ivanna takes one look at the face of displeasure my mother pulls and twists around to plunk down to the floor. With her tail flattened between her legs, she paws my mother’s legs. Her ears flatten and her brown eyes widen. Her whine is a shrill, saccharine hmm hmm as my mother rolls her eyes. My mother turns away and moves to leave. Ivanna’s ears raise now that my mother’s back is turned. Only the little pitter-patter of Ivanna’s paws follow my mother, her tail wagging high and ears bent back so the pink inside is

A few miles south of the outer rim of the Great Fall Forest, stands a gravel trail, lined with massive oak trees and dotted with boulders that wind through a long stretch of lush green grass, and ends at an isolated and forgotten village named Masonburge. The story demonstrates how the relationship between individuals and the pack grows incrementally divergent, and how the language as an embodiment of human intelligence stratifies the pack hierarchy and complicates the dogs’ communication to the humans. In the story “Fifteen Dogs”, the author André Alexis frequently uses personification and anthropomorphism to vivify the dogs’ behavior. The attitude towards the introduction diverges as some of the dogs do not like it, while the other dogs like it and they want to continue living with it.
