Dear Coach Williams, I have been a year long journey to the Tundra biome. It is very cold here and snows majority of the time. Summers bring wildflowers, but other than that it is mostly snow. This biome is found in the Arctic and has absolutely no trees and it does not get much rain here either. There was a sign that greeted us at the entrance reading “Nancy Eschbach Forest River Trail”.…

The big cottonwood tree stood apart from a small grove of winter bare cottonwoods which grew in the wide, sandy, arroyo. He had been dead for a day or more, and the sheep had wandered and scattered up and down the arroyo. Leon and his brother-in-law, Ken, gathered the sheep and left them in the pen at the sheep camp before they returned to the cottonwood tree.…

Life, such a fickle thing to live with, sometimes it goes well and others...this time, it went terribly wrong. The cold October night was a beautiful sight to see, stars peppered the sky as the moon’s light bathed the forest. Harrison’s base slightly askew from the path that I’d taken on my trip up, and was now a lot closer to the walking bridge that I had elected not to use earlier when I’d chosen the downed oak tree to cross instead. But, as I crossed the bridge (which was only a few feet wide) I looked back to see if my feline friend was still with me but she was now nowhere in sight, having disappeared back into the woods again. I wanted to call out to her to see where she might have gone, but then I realized that I didn’t have a…

The Tides of Winter Home doesn’t have to be four walls and a door. It doesn’t have to be a pair of arms, a smile, or even a laugh. Honestly, I believe that home, in its most loosely defined nature, can be just about anything, anything evocative; and one cold, Christmas night, ‘home’ became a moment in time. Something cold stirred me awake…
