Inside America's Most Dangerous Year Round Job It was just before 9:00 on a rainy Autumn morning as I drove up the muddy gravel drive of Baker Logging on the outskirts of Manchester, Tennessee. The outside of the green metal building appeared fairly new, as I walked in, I noticed the smell of lumber faded to a mixture of grease and pumpkin spice candles. It was almost as chilly inside as it was outside, only dry. The desk was full of paperwork and behind it sat Mr.Baker. He appeared almost as I had pictured him, only cleaner.…

He swiveled his head around, eyes widened, pale face, and trembling hands. My hands automatically went up to clasp my mouth, muffling a scream that never came out. He looked at me, and I looked at him. I looked at him, and he looked at me.…

2009 was a year that everything fell apart but not in a way people typically think things fall apart. It did not fall apart all at once; instead, it was little by little each day leading up to this date. Claire, as a 6th grader, woke up at 7:00 a.m. like she always did and went to school. When 3:00 p.m. rolled around and it was time to go back to the place that she once knew as home, that was when everything was different. My writing experience in and out of school has almost always been seen exactly the same. It’s work, you do it for the grade and for some you suffer the entire time. On the occasional paper, usually one with no restrictions and you choose your subject, I find myself in a love and hate relationship with it. The fact being that writing papers has almost always been seen as homework for me. Have your paper done by this day, it needs to be this many words, and no grammatical errors just isn’t something I’d find myself getting hyped for every saturday night.…

Lucy’s alarm went off at 7:33am exactly. Thirty three was her lucky number ever since she was a kid when she guessed exactly how many Hershey Kisses were in the jar in her 3rd grade class. To be honest, I hate school with a passion, yet I love learning as much as living. As a child, schooling created a feeling of loneliness and sadness that echoed throughout my life, even now. I didn’t meet the standard levels for literacy and was separated from my classmates in elementary school for special reading and writing classes. Also the lack of freedom to say and move the way I wished to, and the rebellion that stemmed out of me in middle school due to these limitations. Finally, the conforming in high school to appease my mother, friends that drove me over the edge, yet even now I feel the same bull-crap in college.…
