Creative Writing: Grey's Surgery

People say that everything happens for a reason so when I punched my nurse there was a reason. It isn’t expected of me to do this but when it comes to needles and tubes going up my nose I wasn’t too thrilled. Nurse Kim escorted me to my pre op room to prepare for my knee surgery. I’m not necessarily scared of the doctors or nurses but I just watched a whole season of Grey’s Anatomy before my surgery so in my mind, the simplest surgery can end in death with one mistake. The gown was very plain and open in the back, not the cutest thing in the world but it does come with some pretty snazzy socks. Chills crept upon me when I saw my nurse brought in the equipment for an IV. The clear slushy substance hung from a stand with wires going …show more content…
I really don’t like when people call me dear. My head sharply turns to my mom as she nods. Here we go...Nurse Kim pulls out this thick needle thing with a plastic blue object attached to it. “Hang your left arm over the chair”, instructed my nurse. She tied this elastic band around my arm so tight I could barely feel my arm. Are they trying to have my arm fall of?! Nurse Kim examines my veiny hand. “Perfect,” she said with a creepy voice, “I’m going to put your IV in dear.” “You’re putting the what in where with who?!”, I exclaimed. My dad got up to calm me down. “It won’t hurt McKennah, only a slight pinch”, said my dad. “That’s what they all say”, I snarked back. I’m not putting up a fight...yet. I’m saving my energy for something worse than this and I know something worse is up the road of terror, I can see it in their eyes they’re hiding something from …show more content…
I eyed the object closely when I noticed it was just a Sharpie, Dr. Wolter’s uncapped the sharpie and initialed his initials on my left leg. The cold marker seeped through my skin as I wrote my initials next to my surgeons. I started to doze off but not in a sleepy way. My legs became still as my hands and feet tingled. My doctor mumbled to my parents as I when I saw little stars in the air. All at once I heard a loud noise screeching in my ears with my head pounding while I witnessed a bright light for 3 seconds, a dark pitch black space crept upon

Even after all this examination Gawande still doesn't impart all his confidence into the checklist as an instrument for specialists. In this particular chapter, Mr. Gawande found three cases out of five where the checklist was not been used and found that we had missed something. In one of the surgery, the patient did not get the antibiotic before the incision and, fortunately, the surgeon performing the operation asked if the antibiotic was given within the last six minutes by reading the lines written on the wall poster. The anesthetist had discovered that they had missed giving the patient antibiotic.…

My ability to learn quickly and anticipate was useful during my spine rotation due to the complicated nature of the procedure and the re-positioning after intubation. Aside from having an arterial line set up in the room, I would often have the ultrasound machine in the room in case the anesthesiologist needed assistance in the place of the arterial line. I frequently insisted that the anesthesiologist put an A-line whenever I was in a room with an orthopedic spine surgeon even when the anesthesiologist felt that one wasn’t necessary because they always requested for one to be placed. They often listened to my insistence to prevent any delays to the start of the case.…

I was on the track team; our team was headed to the next city right outside Seattle for our track meet. A car came from out of nowhere; somehow lost control and found its way wedged under the left side front bumper of the bus. Nevertheless, we did not compete that day. Everyone on the bus had to be checked out by the school’s doctor, Dr. Norris before being released. During my examination, Dr. Norris checked my eyes by shining a pen light to test my pupil’s reaction to the light and their response time, checked my head for bruising or bleeding, neck for rotation issues, arms, legs and feet for mobility, flexibility, contusion and scrapes.…

This week in clinical, me and another nursing student were assigned to go and visit the PACU. All patients are admitted to the PACU, Post-anesthesia care unit, following surgery. We visited the PACU in the first week of clinical, so I was familiar with the environment. When I first walked into the PACU it was empty, but the nurse told me just give it a few minutes it is going to get busy. I was assigned to be with a nurse for the day and observe how she takes care of patients after surgery is completed.…

During my preoperative experience I noticed many safety checks were in place, not only for the patient, but also for the doctors, nurses, and surgical technicians. Upon entering the room during my perioperative experience, I immediately noticed steps in place that were being utilized to protect everyone within the room. All of the instruments were sterile. Nurses and surgical technicians were counting down to the very last suture to make sure all of the supplies were present. Everything touching the patient or being used during the procedure for the patient was sterile and if the items were accidentally contaminated, then more sterile gloves were put on to preserve the sterile field that had been broken.…

It will help me to improve my professional practice, gain more knowledge and skills, and increase my critical thinking abilities and confidence in dealing with difficult situations.
