“No”, that was my response as soon as he asked me.
Did he know what he was getting into?
He wants to join one of the most dangerous gangs in our neighborhood and he wants me to join too? And for what? For some power, that isn’t even power? He is my best friend, but I don’t think I can follow him on this. “Come on Blake, stop being such a wuss, it isn’t that big of a deal we aren’t going to kill anybody or that sorta thing we just gonna have a reputation if we join and no one gonna mess with us.” Jake says. “I can’t join, you shouldn’t be joining a gang anyway. Focus on school and try getting out of here. Don’t get affiliated with a gang just for some reputation you gonna lose in a few months.” I say back.

I’m still going to school though, i’m not going to school just because of this. I walk out of my room with my bookbag, my uniform on, and start eating breakfast. My dad walks down our stairs and says, “I thought Jake was sleeping over.”
“He decided not to stay, he had something to do.” I get up and wash my dish and say to my dad, “ Well I’m heading off, bye dad.”
While I was walking to school, I constantly started looking over my shoulder. Everytime a car drove by I froze up, thinking some kind of drive-by hit and run was going to happen. I got to school safely and started heading to my first period class. On my way there it had already started. One of the gang members and one of the most popular kids in our school came up to me and said,
“You a punk, watch your back around this neighborhood little boy.” I ignored him and walked to my class, knowing him he probably skipping class or something. I didn’t get any trouble really throughout the whole day until lunch. Jake stopped sitting at the table where all our friends sat and went over to where all the gang members sat. I saw them hand him a bandana that represented the gang they were in and thought to myself, What are you getting yourself into?
I’m pretty sure everyone else at my table thought the same

The most common definition of a youth gang involves self-formed group of young teens imbedded within a structured organization. The group is distinctly recognizable by those in their community, tend to have a name, and have a negative association with crime (Klein 1971). The group adheres to a strict agenda and often partakes in criminal behavior to reach a set of goals outlined within the guidelines (Thrasher 1927). Additionally, as determined, youth gang activity is contingent on an individual’s socio-economic status, race, and neighborhood (Klein 1971). However, given that such factors are never standard across all communities, it becomes difficult to place every individual into a standardized definition of gang members.…
