Encountering Someone like Dr. P was a journey in itself if you were to ask Doctor Sacks.
Dr. P as he is known was a teacher of music at the local school as well as a singer and an accomplished painter. This is where Doctor Sacks comes in because at school Dr. P was getting to a place where his vision was becoming a problem, not for him but those around him. D. Medical Humanities program at the University of Texas. In her article–“Last Laughs: Gallows Humor And Medical Education”–Piemonte argues the effect of backstage gallows humor on defining perceptions of being a doctor and how it is illustrative of larger problems such as not fully grasping the intricacies of death, disease, and pain. Piemonte does not, however, push an argument of whether or not this form of humor is appropriate or useful. Instead, she ponders upon why medical practitioners feel that it is necessary to engage in such acts of dark comedic relief. The author also defines gallows humor as a natural method of processing and dealing with overwhelming feelings of inadequacy and frailty.…

A doctor is expected wear the professional white coat, underneath a dress shirt and tie and pants, dress shoes and socks. Looking at it from Goffman’s Dramaturgical Approach, this is the costume a doctor would wear to be believable, the office would be the stage, the exam tables and stethoscope would be two of the props (Chapter 4). However our doctor also changes his impression of other people by wearing bright colors every day in the office. Even though to be a doctor he has to wear the professional attire, mixing an array of bright colors makes him seem not as stern as and more approachable than a doctor wearing neutral tones may. From Goffman’s Impression Management, our doctor is able to maintain the professional side with the white coat and clothes but can still be perceived as fun by altering his other clothing’s…

In the scholarly article, “ Behavioral Study of Obedience” written and conducted by Stanley Miller, an experiment was performed to see if a group of amenable participants, named subjects, were willing to provide electrical shocks to another person, the experiment tested how far down the severity of shocks the subject would administer to the victim. The question is would being in the position of control and having a feeling as if the subject cannot leave, makes shocking another person justifiable? To begin the experiment, a total of 40 male subjects all ranging within age, education levels, and different races participated in what they thought was a “Study of memory and learning at Yale University” (Milgram, 2). To make the experiment as…
