“Ahhhhh, oh oh PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!” he screamed as he clutched where his right leg used to be. Blood flowed out of the wound as he could see the mangled bone coming out of his thigh. The explosion had caused him to fly thirty yards from his previous position. A tall dark haired man with a well groomed mustache pulled him towards the trench.
“Ooww,” he moaned. The dark haired man dragged the injured boy vigorously, dodging explosions and bullets.
The man grunted as he tossed the boy into the safety of the trench. The boy crawled to an unoccupied corner of the muddy trench. The Earth constantly shook, spraying dirt into the eyes of wailing men.”What is your name son?” the man said to the innocent looking blonde haired boy.
“Ph-Ph Phillip.” the

“Okay,” said Phillip excitedly.
“It’s the story of when I fell in love,” said Poe.
Phillip grinned as he told the fabulous story of his love, meeting a woman at the train stop and traveling the world with her by boat, bus, and train.
After the story, Poe left as usual. Phillip was satisfied with his life, and out of happiness he closed his eyes and took his last breath. Poe tended to his duties when yellow gas sprayed all over the trench. Screams of cheer came from the enemy, while screams of pain came from inside the trench. Poe,dodging waling bodies, sprinted towards where Phillip sat. He rounded the corner to find Phillip’s dead body.
He fell to his knees and wept. “Why, why you… It’s my f… ahhh!” he cried.
The mustard gas crept around the corner as Poe pulled out his gas mask. He strapped the mask on, but it wouldn't fit properly due to his mustache. He quickly pulled out his pocket knife and trimmed the edges of his mustache. Before he readjusted his mask, he pulled a lockette off his neck with pictures of his deceased son and wife. The tears rolled down his face as he laid the lockette into the cold hands of Phillip, put on his mask, and climbed out of the trench into the never ending bloody chaos that is

Poe impedes the advance of the quick tempo; demanding its deceleration. When Poe decelerates this tempo, it furthermore affects the story’s tranquility, portraying the narrator’s ascension into optimism. This is shown when the narrator exclaims, “I fell suddenly calm, and lay smiling at the glittering death, as a child at some rare bauble”(69). This description, compared to a child entranced, by an ornament, portrays the narrator’s optimism; the scintillating surface of the bauble is positive, enlightening, optimistic. By introducing vibrant diction (which strays from the previous, adverse diction), Poe prompts a question: what persuades the narrator to think differently?…

Since Edgar Allan Poe has died there has been no evidence or proof of how he died. There are many different theories on how Poe had died; my thought is that he was killed by cooping during the election times. “Poe was discovered on election night outside Gunner’s Hall, a pop-up polling station for the day’s events” (Thompson). Cooping was a process that rigged the elections, people would be kidnapped and drugged on substances and forced to vote for whoever there kidnappers wanted them too. They were dressed in different clothes so they could be incognito and vote multiple times at several different polls.…

“I then smile gaily, to find the deed so far done.” (Poe, 384) “I put a dark lantern, all closed, closed so that no light shone out.” (Poe, 382) “Why would they not be gone?” (Poe, 386) After he kills the old man, his excitement and cheerful feelings are rising. This shows how little empathy he has for the old man and how he is mentally unstable.…

The Power of First Person Writing Modern-day Americans are fascinated with horror movies and thrillers. From Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elm St., people pour into theaters and pay to be scared! This was not the case in the beginning of Edgar Allan Poe’s career. People thought he was a crazy psychopath. They actually banned his books at one point because enough people complained that they were of no use and only brought bad thoughts to the human brain, which would lead to a rise in crime rates.…

In this story, Poe shows the mental state of the character by having him explain all the actions he takes in great detail, but not anything else like his name or where he is now. When he was in the room with the old man he quoted, “ All in vain; because Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim”(38). I think the author is trying to show us how the character thinks that death is already upon the old man and that he will die anyways. After he kills the man he tells the reader, “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body”(39). Hear the author shows the mental state of the character by making the reader want to question his state of sanity and for the character to describe in detail what he did with the old man’s body after he killed him.…
