Death Valley Continued…
I noticed a clump of trees in the blazing, hot desert. Where there were trees, I thought, there has to be water. The trees were only about 50 feet away from me but walking towards them in the 120 degree heat felt like they were 10 miles away. I wiped away my sweat with the back of my hand. Once we got to the trees, I couldn’t help but scream. “We are saved! We can survive for at least 2 weeks here!” Gina and Jenny scrambled to the trees to see what I was yelling about. There was a trailer. Old, but still useful. I went inside it and found some old canned food and hot water. The food smelled like it had been in that trailer for decades. It was either we eat the canned food or we eat rocks and cacti. So we decided to eat the canned food. We went to

Even though I thought it was the end too. Right then though, we heard a loud noise that sounded like a tornado. It was the wind from a helicopter! We all raced out of the trailer and jumped up and down screaming to try to get the helicopter to notice us. Sure enough, the helicopter landed right in front of us. We were all so ecstatic words couldn’t even explain how we felt. The rescuers grabbed us by the hand and pulled us into the helicopter. They gave us fresh water and food, which tasted like Thanksgiving dinner, even though it was only a protein bar and water. Then, the rescuers asked what happened and if everyone was alright. They took us to the hospital for a few hours to make sure. Then we got to go home and see our family. We missed them so much, and they missed us too. “I was worried sick about you guys!” exclaimed my aunt with tears in her eyes. Jenny, Gina, and I told everyone the story. A few weeks later, Jenny and Gina went to school and felt more confident now like they could accomplish any task. Everyone wanted to hear our story. Many people admired us because we were strong enough to survive getting lost in Death

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

There was low-toned talk among the troops. The officers were impatient and snappy, their countenances clouded with the tales of misfortune. The troops, sifting through the forest, were sullen. Bullets whizzed overhead hell-bent on hitting their targets. James pressed himself against the mud wall of the trench, as if by doing so it would take him away from the corner of hell that his old naive self had willingly entered. Allied planes tore through the open sky with kamikazes right on their tails. Gaping holes left in the ground by heavy artillery were full with stagnant water and the rotting corpses of dead soldiers, their weapons bent and rusted displaying a haunting past that time wouldn't forget.…

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…

On Monday night about 8 o'clock, I reached the guard, about 100 people passed it and went towards the custom house where the king's money is lodged. They immediately surrounded the sentry posted there, and with clubs and other weapons threatened to execute their vengeance on him. I was soon informed by a townsman their intention was to carry off the soldier from his post and murder him. I immediately sent a non-commissioned officer and 12 men to protect both the sentry and the king's money, and very soon followed myself to prevent, if possible, all disorder. Nay, so far was I from intending the death of any person that I suffered the troops to go to the spot where the unhappy affair took place without any loading in their pieces; nor did I ever give orders for loading them.…

I'm miserable. I have not recorded anything for a time, despite making an attempt to avoid wasting what is left of my time in this wretched trench. Some nights back a cloudburst happened which left both sides basically fallen. As luck would have it did not hurt anyone but creating it very difficult to fight. Nowadays I think of these trenches as holding cells for prisoners, the site I am guaranteed to spend the remaining months of my life in until i am eventually exhausted and then we are killed like some pack of mice in laboratory experimentation.…
