Day of Terror The time is 5:45 a.m. in Portland Maine. The first two of nineteen hijackers pass through security at the Portland International Jetport. Their names are Mohamed Atta and Abdul Aziz al-Omari. These men board a commuter flight that will connect with Flight 11. They will be the ones along with three others to board American Airlines Flight 11 and fly into the North Tower. Within the next few hours, the remaining hijackers will board United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines 77, and United Airlines Flight 93. It is 7:59 a.m in Boston, Massachusetts. American Airlines Flight 11 is taking off. There is 76,400 gallons of fuel in the tank. On board are 76 passengers with no idea of the five hijackers on board. Four of these men are from Saudi Arabia. Their names are Abdul Aziz al Omari, Wail al Shehri, Waleed al Shehri, Satam al Suqami. The other hijacker on board is Mohamed Atta from Egypt. Betty Ann Ong, a flight attendant, reports to ground personnel that the cockpit is “unreachable” and that a possible hijacking is taking place. Moments before the call, a hijacker stabs and kills a man named Daniel M. Lewin. It is speculated, due Lewin’s military background, that he tried to stop the hijackers from taking over Flight 11. Most of passengers know very little about the events unfolding and what is about to occur. After the cockpit has been taken, the plane's transponder is turned off. This increased the difficulty of locating the hijacked plane immensely. Another call is made from the crew at 8:32 a.m. This call is made by Madeline Amy Sweeney. It lasts for about 12 minutes.
