By insignificant back alleys and little-trod lanes, Johnny made his way to the ferry slip in North Boston. From there to Charlestown boats were going back and forth. No civilian except only the Boston doctors, who had offered their services, were allowed close to the Wharf. It was well Johnny had thought to not put on Pumpkin’s uniform. Mrs. Bessie had been right about one thing. A Yankee caught impersonating a British soldier would be shot. Johnny kept well out of the moonlight and away from the flare of torches, and huddled between a warehouse and a tanning shed. Slowly Johnny started down to the ferry slip.
“Oy’!” A tough, callused hand covered Johnny’s mouth as another pulled him roughly back into the shadows. “Do you wish to be hanged?”

“Did Doctor Warren send you?”
“Yes.”
“Then I will come.” “Very well,” Nat nodded, satisfied, “Come on, then.” Nat quietly and hastily led Johnny west of the slip to a hidden portion of the shore. There sat a small rowboat tied to huge rocks. Nat and Johnny quickly freed the rowboat and pushed it into the dark waters. Nat then took the oars and started rowing smooth strokes. No more than 10 minutes later the boys came upon a beautiful ship. On the mass of the ship “THE WITCH” had been painted in bold, exquisite letters. The rowboat reached the ship and burly sailors heaved Nat and Johnny on board. Nat immediately started directing his sailors. Authoritative shouts and burly men flew across the deck. The Witch started to glide through the sea. Johnny, taken aback by the constant yelling and the hectic men, spotted some barrels on the side of the ship and set off to sit there. A few minutes later Nat came to sit with Johnny. “Johnny,” Nat removed Johnny from his thoughts. “Yes?” Johnny asked lazily. “Do you mind if I join you?” Nat moved to sit on the barrel beside Johnny. “Why?” Johnny

You are in love with this lass! You even named your ship after her!” Johnny exclaimed. Nat suddenly grew very solemn, “I thought so. I even thought she was in love with me, but she is engaged to another.” Nat explained. “The last time I saw her, I asked her to leave her Aunt’s house and come with me. She said she would like that very much, but could not because her cousin is deathly il-.” “Aha!” Johnny interrupted again. “She did not stay for her engagement! She stayed because her cousin was ill. She must be in love with you! She must! Now you listen here Captain Nat Eaton, as soon as this ship lands in Charlestown you must depart and go straight to your beloved and confess your love! Show her that you named your ship after her! There is no way she will resist you!” Johnny exclaimed excitedly. “You truly believe so?” Nat asked filled with renewed hope. “Aye.” “Then I will follow your counsel, Johnny Tremaine! After I depose you and your fellow Whigs in Charlestown I will sail to Connecticut. I will find Kit and profess my love for her!” Nat announced happily.

Epilogue: Nat kept his promise to Johnny. After Nat dropped Johnny off in Charlestown he sailed to Connecticut and professed his love for

Adrenaline rushed through my tensed body as though I inched toward the edge of a cliff ready to jump off. Governor Hutchinson just rejected our plea to send the Dartmouth back to England, and everyone in Boston couldn’t take much more of England’s petty games of taxation and their seemingly unlimited power over the colonies. Once the governor’s answer came to everyone at the Old South Meetinghouse, I think we all felt something needed to be done to send a message to England that we had enough (Brooks).
