sunny day, though slightly chilly, and people were all over the park doing different activities.
Some moms were running with their kids in strollers, others walked and talked with their friends
having a good time and sipped on their drinks from Wood’s Coffee, but some was merely sitting
on the benches looking at the stunningly beautiful nature. A question that arose as I watched the
surrounding and what people were doing and how they interacted was why do so many come
here to Boulevard Park when these activities they can do at home? Though not all cities have
sidewalks, which Rebecca Solnit pointed out in her essay called “The Aerobic Sisyphus …show more content…
And also I witnessed to young men playing on their guitars and another on a
harmonica. I thought why don’t we see so much activity in other public places? Is it due to the
lack of space as Rebecca Solnit suggests in her essay or is it something else? Is it only what I
have mentioned earlier which was that the park lets individuals to separate from the hustle and
bustle of life and just enjoy life and take in the beautiful nature? Well, looking at Bellingham I
can’t really say that it has such a huge problem with the lack of space. It has sidewalks and is
pretty safe to cross unlike other cities like Phoenix, Houston, and others. Rebecca Solnit claims
in the “Aerobic Sisyphus and the Suburbanized Psyche that “one could walk in the suburbs but
there was seldom any place to go” (Solnit 276). She is saying that though there might be space
to walk there is no place to go but no destination because there are just other houses similar to
theirs and everyone is locked up in their houses watching television which discourages …show more content…
We don’t experience such fresh air and beautiful scenery
but rather pollution of air and place filled with cars and buildings. Though individuals could go
and walk and run outside of the park on the streets or sidewalks, people prefer parks because it
is safer and offers something beautiful and different to see than the mundane everyday life. It
also provides the opportunity to communicate with the community and have one on one
conversation or even with a group without having the need to be rushed by other things you
might need to do or by the loudness or busyness of towns and cities. The contrast of what
people are used to seeing is what attracts them to it so those who live in the rural places will
probably not go to the park as much as those who live in the urban areas because it is different
than to what they are used to and also refreshing and healthy. Like Solnit says that we don’t
use our bodies for utilitarian work anymore but for recreational and needed that place to go to
people go to parks, malls, and gyms. (Solnit, 285). So the contrast is what brings people to
Boulevard Park; the place where they are able to shut out the outside world and enjoy
