Creative Writing: Athena's Flaw

An alarm blares in the background. Athena's icy prison begins to thaw. "Come back . . . you bastard." She forces the words out of her mouth causing her to cough violently. "Critical failure in cryogenic array. All vault residents must vacate immediately," the Vault-Tech computer announces. "What? Fuck," Athena cusses under her shaky breath. She punches the glass rather weakly. Suddenly, the door begins to open. Athena attempts to carefully step out of the cryogenic pod but she loses her footing and falls onto the frozen floor. Her whole body feels like it's cramping. "It's so cold," she pants. Step by step, she manages to stand up and the sight in front of her causes tears to stream down her face. "Nate!" She whimpers. Darkness engulfs her and soon the light finds her. The elevator’s door unlocks and the sun’s warm embrace greets her. Athena’s eyes widen and her mouth opens. The sunlight causes her eyes to burn but she can’t allow herself to close them. She can see Sanctuary in the distance. It looks like it’s falling apart. Some houses are completely collapsed in while others are barely standing. She spots her house and immediately begins to run down the hill towards it. Deacon watches Athena emerge from a distance with a pair of binoculars. When he was messing around with the terminal, he realized that someone purposely deactivated everyone else’s life support and left Athena the sole survivor. Whether recent or not, someone was there and was close to liberating Athena. Did he interrupt a Courser’s work? Is the institute watching her at this very moment? He can only wonder. In the meantime, he needs to keep an eye or two on Athena. Tears fly through the wind as Athena runs home. The air she’s breathing in tastes bitter and make her lungs feel heavy. She jumps over some skeletons lying between her path and her body suddenly
