An Israelite’s Journal

I cannot believe we escaped Egypt. I was sure I was going to die stacking bricks for Pharaoh’s

tomb. How Moses convinced the Pharaoh to release us, I cannot fathom.

Today was the most terrifying day of my life. Pharaoh sent out his men to retrieve us and

enslave us again. We were hemmed by the Red Sea in front and the army behind. I, at the time,

wondered what Moses would do because all he had done was cry out to G-d.

Today I walked across the Red Sea on dry ground. It was a miracle! Moses held out his staff

and the sea parted like walls of water. We hurried across because the Egyptians were

descending upon us. Their commander gave the order and they came charging at us, but while

the Egyptians crossed,

Wilderness of Sin.

I have never been this hungry. The whole camp is starving and it is Moses’s fault. At least in

Egypt we would be fed. Tonight we are camped in the Wilderness of Sin and Moses is

beseeching G-d for food, mostly because he is pretty sure the camp wants to stone him. He is

I woke this morning to white flakes outside my tent. I do not know what it is but some say it is

edible. Moses told us it is bread from Heaven and he calls it manna. We are supposed to collect

The manna I collected yesterday has worms! How revolting!

We were in deep trouble today. Amalek came with his powerful army to annihilate the whole

camp. Moses recruited us to fight this massive army and he also placed Joshua in command of

an army made of slaves. In the fight I saw Aaron and Hur holding up Moses’s arms. We fought

hard and to the glory of G-d, we defeated Amalek.

Moses went to G-d up on Mount Sinai, and has been gone for 40 days. The camp is

Not only did God ask Abraham to follow him, but he also promised to bless him and make of his descendants a great nation. When God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his beloved son, Abraham is ready to obey God, but God chooses not to require the sacrifice. I believe that this is an important step in the relationship of God with his people, as it shows how much God loves his people if they follow God’s will. The promise of God to Abraham and his descendants is something that can be found through the history of Christianity. The promise of God continued from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob (known as Israel) and then to Joseph (Jacob’s son) who God used to take Abraham descendants to a secure place (Egypt).…

Moses is undoubtedly one of the most important scriptural figures in Judaism, and his influence has been felt through every generation of the religion. In fact, Moses’ prophetic narrative and heroic actions were so far-reaching that they transcended his own era and established Jewish traditions that are carried on this day. According to tradition, Moses received both written instruction from God in the form of the Ten Commandments and oral teachings from God at Mount Sinai and Mount Horeb. Moses was the first major Abrahamic figure to solidify and author the written tradition, and he expanded upon those lessons through his own oral teaching.…

On Monday night about 8 o'clock, I reached the guard, about 100 people passed it and went towards the custom house where the king's money is lodged. They immediately surrounded the sentry posted there, and with clubs and other weapons threatened to execute their vengeance on him. I was soon informed by a townsman their intention was to carry off the soldier from his post and murder him. I immediately sent a non-commissioned officer and 12 men to protect both the sentry and the king's money, and very soon followed myself to prevent, if possible, all disorder. Nay, so far was I from intending the death of any person that I suffered the troops to go to the spot where the unhappy affair took place without any loading in their pieces; nor did I ever give orders for loading them.…

Moving on the the spread of these religions and the experience of early believers. Of all the great events in Moses’ life, there is one time period that is probably the most important—his time in Midian. Moses had grown up in the palaces of Egypt from a young age. He knew what it was to have much, and it was probably an extremely good life. Egypt was never known for being the poorest among nations in history, so it stands to reason that Moses, who was adopted into the royal family, had much. However, one simple act brought about a huge change in Moses’ life.…

In DreamWorks’ 1998 animated film, The Prince of Egypt, viewers are introduced to Moses, a young man filled with life, vibrancy, and mischief. His life was preordained by God to lead his people - the Israelites - out of captivity and into the Promised Land. This modern Midrash not only revitalizes the story of Moses, but changes its original purpose. By comparing and contrasting the DreamWorks version of Moses’ youth and exit from Egypt to Midian to that of the biblical story and scholarly commentary, it is revealed that the purpose of The Prince of Egypt is to emphasize social change and justice.…
