Creative Writing: All Quiet On The Western Front

My dear mother, Just a few lines to tell you of my current state. I am in the hospital, but no need to worry. I am recovering from a minor injury. I may not be returning home anytime soon. The weather here is rather rainy. I have heard of the stories as my comrades visit from time to time. The rain in the trenches is apparently a torture. The water is usually over their knees, and sometimes above their waists! There have been many other men who have come to this hospital needing treatment for their severe trench foot. Though the trenches provide some protection from the shelling, bullets are flying randomly.

Some of the fellow men here are sick simply from the stench that lingers there. Shallow graves contain rotting bodies of our friends

My Dearest Nancy, I am writing to you from the trenches in my “dug-out”. It is cold and wet. Winter has not been kind to us out on the Western Front. Many of our chaps have gotten what they call “trench foot”. A nasty disease where your feet turn blue and swell up – even go numb.…

There was low-toned talk among the troops. The officers were impatient and snappy, their countenances clouded with the tales of misfortune. The troops, sifting through the forest, were sullen. In the youth's company once a man's laugh rang out. A dozen soldiers turned their faces quickly toward him and frowned with vague displeasure.…

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…

In the morning while local middle schoolers are waiting for the bus a strange lady claps while walking along the sidewalk and scaring local children. On 9/28/15 two anonymous witnesses were waiting for the school bus when they first saw the perpetrator, an unknown lady who was slowly walking and clapping. One eyewitness reported the lady would “sometimes stop and look into trees like she was looking for something she had lost” Both witnesses found the situation “awkward” and “weird.” Mrs. Stillwell, Gahanna bus 23 driver and a bystander, questioned who the lady was and what she was looking for. Minutes later the perpetrator was seen again still whacking her hands together.…

Along the Hungarian- Serbian border, hundreds of migrants and refugees fled from a temporary camp due to frustration with authorities. The camp, in Roszke, Hungary, contained hundreds of people waiting for buses to transport them, many of whom had waited overnight in the cold to move toward the border near Austria and Budapest. However, only one bus arrived, which created a huge commotion among the migrants, who were then well aware that there were no more buses coming. One Syrian man stated, “We’ve been here for two days and the Hungarian government only brings one bus?” Frustrated, some migrants made their way toward the railway line and escaped from the camp, leading to most of the others following.…

I think I'm starting to get trench foot, my feet are disgusting. I think by the time I come home I may have to get my foot amputated. The conditions in the trenches are terrible; I cannot even begin to describe them to you. The trenches are dug in clay and sand. The water from the rain is unable to flow through and soak into the ground, causing floods and huge puddles where we are supposed to stand all day and all night.…

“And not a second too soon,” smiled Hannelore. Without even muttering a word, Chandler had no choice but to smile alongside Germania. Seventy years after the end of that destructive War, it was quite a sight to see several functional Panzer tanks, albeit ones repainted in colors different than their German counterparts that served during the war. Although they seemed to be like their original predecessors at first, upon closer inspection, these ones appeared to be modernized variations.…

Riley perched herself on the edge of the cabin bed, absentmindedly following routine and pulling on her combat boots, thick and heavy, ready for fighting. Moonlight was seeping through the gaps in the blacked out windows; there was a gentle spring breeze making its way through the log cabin walls. She was small for her age of 14 but she had strength and speed on her side. Riley could hear the other campers singing around the campfire and the subtle smells of burnt sugar from the marshmallows being roasted outside.…
