Creative Writing: Alia's Death

On the day that Alia had died, she was already having a pretty shitty day. To begin with, she had missed the airing of her favourite show as she was too occupied with studying for an exam - which she had only just discovered she'd failed. Much to her dismay, her teacher had required her to do a make-up exam. The brunette tucked a strand of stray hair behind her ear, as her eyes narrowed on the words printed on what seemed to be the millionth flashcard. The hastily scribbled terms seemed to blur together as she blinked rapidly and pressed her forehead onto the card, as if that could imprint it in her memory. She massaged her aching temples and leaned back into her wooden chair. Deciding to take a quick stroll around

Hello. I am Ella Pietilae a 11th grade English student in Reeths-Puffer high school. It has come to my attention that there has been lot of controversy about April Henry’s book “The Girl Who Was Supposed To Die”. Some of our schools students and their parents want the book to be removed from our school library shelf because of the horrible things the girl is going through in this book. That aroused my interest to read the book.…

Stick to your Roots People often pass as something they are not, because they are either too afraid, or too embarrassed to reveal their true identity. For some, it easier just to pass for something they are not, for others it makes life a lot more difficult than necessary. For example, someone who smokes cigarettes, may try to pass as a non-smoker, because they are too embarrassed to admit to the unhealthy habit they have developed. In Nella Larsen’s, Passing, Clare Kendry passes as a white person, instead of staying true to her African American roots.…

I will be reviewing and analyzing one of my favorite movie. The movie “Me and Earl and the Dying girl” was directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and has won a few awards. The film uses many styles of cuts, visuals, and great background music, but what I will be focusing mostly on is the silence of the film and it's effectiveness on how that develops the movie. The movie is about a girl named Rachel who gets diagnosed with cancer and meets two young boys with big hearts as they bend over backwards to make her happy.…

I walked up to the entrance of the evacuated home. The house could have been an enchanting two-story house; with its ivory framed windows, and front lawn. If it was not abandoned and lifeless, maybe this house would have been the dream house everyone fancied. But it's lifeless and boorish, just like the carrion of Timothy Woodsen. His body was no longer there, but the evidence was.…

There’s a reason there has been over hundreds of coming of age novels published, because they contain everything a reader wants to read heartache, suffering, and loss. Everyone has or will have a coming of age, it is a monumental moment of life that one never forgets. In The Death of the Heart, Bowen argues the disruptive and hard experience to come of age is through depicting the harshness and cruelty of the world and how it has the power to transform someone from innocent to knowledgeable: to come of age. Bowen exemplifies a coming of age through contrasting settings of one that helps flourish someone and one that shows the realities of the real world, effects of positive and negative characters in one’s development, and the knowledge conflict…

When looking at history, dictators and dictatorship have played a large role in controlling the desires of those they dominate, in such areas as religion and freedom of speech. An obvious example would be Adolph Hitler, who committed mass genocide on over 11 million “undesirables” such as Jews, the handicapped, and the gay, regardless of age or gender. Further, there were 50-70 million other lives taken in World War II, which Hitler started. Another brutal dictator was Saloth Sar, or as he was known, Pol Pot. Pot killed nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s then population by means of execution, torture, starvation, and disease.…

After cutting his teeth on last season’s highly successful Flatline and Mummy on the Orient Express I expect many have been looking forward to seeing this year’s offering from Jamie Mathieson. The scares and chills maybe toned down in The Girl Who Died compared to his previous offerings – indeed, after the last two stories a more upbeat tale is well placed – yet Mathieson still manages to stamp his unique mark on what’s traditionally known as the light-hearted romp. In essence, the events that transpire in the episode are a series of mistakes or miscalculations that the characters make along the way. Right from the start where we see one character floating alone in space, to the closing shot of another looking jaded and perturbed, all the…

The death of a loved one is never an easy thing to take in. As you go through the stages of mourning, it seems to get easier to accept it. I have never gone through the stages of mourning. Chronicle of a Death Foretold pursues the story of a murder in Colombia. The narrator develops an idiosyncratic scene in which many of the town’s inhabitants were aware of the predestined murder. However, no one impeded the murder or had the sagacity to caution the victim. The crime took place by hand of the major characters in the novel. Although these characters experienced the crime firsthand, the minor characters in the novel were also directly involved.…

In the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel García-Márquez, Márquez uses structure and magical realism to make Santiago’s death inevitable, highlighting the idea that fate is inescapable, and that it outweighs ideals such as truth or justice. In part one, the reader learns that the novel is written from what seems to be the perspective of an old friend of Santiago’s who is piecing together the events leading up to Santiago’s death, 27 years after Santiago has died. The narrator puts together the events as told by many different people, relying on their memories to gain a clearer picture of what occurred all those many years ago. As such, the information given to the reader is often contradictory and unreliable, which creates ambiguity…
