I awoke to a voice that seemed to be directly outside of my bed. “Good morning, your majesty” he said, in a soothing tone. I tugged the curtains of my bed away to reveal a servant of mine, bowl of water in hand ready to partake in my morning washing. “Ah, yes, good morning to you as well” I replied. He led me to my privy chamber, where my servant soaked my hands and face in the bowl of water. After the cleansing, a second servant entered the room to aid my dressing. “Good morning, King Polaris”, he stated with a grin. My servants then assisted as I donned my royal attire. While in this process, my lovely wife, Cassiopeia, comes and gives me a quick peck on the cheek. “Hello, Cassie”, I stated as she passed by. As my dressing concluded, Cassie …show more content…

Following my visits, I was stuck in the predicament of wondering what to do with my leisure time. “What to do, what to do…” I thought to myself. Eventually, I decided to partake in some hunting. So, I called my men to the great hall of the palace to have them ready my horse and huntsman. As I waited for them, I finished sharpening my arrows in preparation for the hunt. “A deer would be nice” I said to myself, as I always love surprising the tenants of my palace with a dinner I had hunted for earlier in the day. Straight-backed, uniformed wait staff crisscrossed the floor of City Hall’s ballroom. With silver trays held aloft, they glided effortlessly through the crowd, their blank expressions cleverly masking the tedium of serving champagne and hors d'oeuvres to equally bored guests. Dozens of white-clothed tables adorned with elaborate arrangements of hydrangeas and magnolias gave refuge to the honored attendees who were either too tired or too disinterested to mingle with the men and women gathered in cliques throughout the room. From their position on a small raised platform, a string quartet provided a pleasant auditory backdrop to the chatter of voices, the dulcet tones swelling and falling like a warm summer breeze. It was the party event of the year, and for the mayor’s wife, the soirée was an opportunity to gain the enviable reputation of perfect hostess; for her guests, it was a grandiose display of autocratic superiority.…

Around Antonius, frustrated men pounded their empty glasses on the table and cried for more alcohol, while tossing shouts across the room carelessly. Inwardly he cringed, wishing for the hundredth time he had picked a better meeting place, as an empty glass sailed inches away from his head and smashed onto the floor, shattering into thousands of small fragments. During nights, “he was almost unmanageable, and pages had to sit on him while he was tied to his bed. By day, he swore, uttering strange indecencies and ‘oaths which had never yet been heard from the lips’, begging his attendants to put an end to his miserable life. Moods of deep depression alternated with spasms of childish mischievousness in which he would get his pages to wheel him about the room or he would lie on his bed to ‘defend himself by gathering up his feet, and then darting them forward with violence against those who pressed against him’.”…
