C h a p t e r 2 2 On the brisk morning of April 12, 1688, William Ashby and John Holbrook are coming together for a double wedding to marry the two daughters of Matthew Wood, Judith and Mercy. On this day, Nat Eaton is going to announce his proposal to Kit before everyone in the colony. Nat and Kit were most excited that Matthew approved of the proposal. However, Matthew is the only other family who knows of the newly engaged couple. “Oh, Kit this is the most beautiful dress I have ever seen,” Judith excitedly expressed. She had noticed a dark figure near the front of the hall. Kit whispered under her breath, “This is it, time to announce my engagement.” Nat cleared his throat. As he began to speak his voice started to crack. It was obvious he was nervous. “Kit and I are going to get married,” he spitted out under a single breath. Judith and Mercy’s faces were uplifted with joy. Standing next to them were John Holbrook and William Ashby. They shared the same expression, jaw dropped. Simultaneously Kit, Nat, and Matthew said “Why not.” “There has been a secret my sister told me about a long time ago. She had went to Connecticut to come and visit me. She met this lovely man. He came to call her one night at my house. I had left to go to Lecture but she did not attend because she had a cold. The next day she was gone. She had wrote to me she did the most horrible thing. She did not tell me of her fiancé back in Barbados. She had an affair with the man from Connecticut. Around 9 months later he went to visit her. She gave him the baby boy and told him to go back to the colonies to raise him. To forget about her son in the states she had you with your father. You’re mom died in the shipwreck to go visit her son. Kat your dad was so supportive and was ok with the whole thing. However they died on that boat.
