In Charmion Browne’s youth her family was hopping from shelter to shelter in New York City. They had moved throughout multiple shelters throughout the years and were fortunate enough to not have to live on the streets from the shelters overcrowding. Several children that had been affected by the overcrowding had been sent to a jail in the Bronx that was no longer in use because there had been nowhere else for them to live. Browne’s family had lived in a house, shelters and an unused jail all in the matter of years.…
What I found most surprising was the fact that some people don 't want to be helped, and/or will not admit they need help. Another shocking factor prevails that people can go from extreme success to extreme poverty very fast, one is not born into homelessness. I have a profound appreciation for the people who take the initiative to help the homeless, and go out of there way to make them feel…
As you’re walking down the street, and you see the homeless man on the corner, what do you think? What do you do? Maybe you walk a little faster and avoid eye contact, because he doesn’t deserve your help. He didn’t work hard enough to be in the same position you are. It’s not your fault that the little girl and her mother sitting on the street corner covered in dirt with a cardboard sign that’s pleading for help, doesn’t have enough money to pay their bills.…

It was Thanksgiving morning, my brother, my sisters, and I were on our way to meet our parents and family at the AT&T stadium to tailgate at the Cowboys football game. On our way there, we stop at a red light, and I notice a homeless man sitting there. He had nowhere to go and nothing to eat. I felt bad for him and asked Jennifer, my sister, if we should give him some food. She says yes, so we stop at the gas station right in front of us.…

He tipped his head back and hit the dope again twice. “I don’t know, but we got some major heat on us right now. That shit must’ve happened while I was still locked up.” “That was the same day that my daughter graduated.…
My parents relocated my siblings and I from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to San Diego, California in order to allow us to lead a prosperous future. Unlike children in Guatemala, we were presented with an excellent education in San Diego and indulged in learning. For as long as I can recall, discovering new facts and learning new things about the world fascinated me; consequently, I quickly began wanting to help others in their pursuit of learning. I was always the first to offer help to my struggling peers and would stay behind during recess to assist them. My acts were fueled by the desire to see students succeed and I would do anything to help them prosper.…
Experience: On my (Alina) first day of volunteering at St. Francis House, I sorted baby clothes in the children’s room. As I was sorting clothes, I began to contemplate what it must be like to have a newborn and experience poverty. Furthermore, I was working in a community clinic during my obstetric clinical. I had the opportunity to have first hand experience with low income pregnant women.…
So imagine have a great time after school being with your friends, everything is perfect. I even talked to my friend who i havent talked in years. Well later around like 8 or 9 at night youre going back home following but you have one friend following you and youre following your other friend behind them in your seperate cars. So its just 3 cars going down the road. It's already dark and youre on a long road with very little street lights…
Many young people in America want to achieve a higher education, but often are unable to because they lack the assistance and support needed. Oftentimes, homeless youth aren’t aware they qualify for a higher education as they access the government resources. Without this knowledge, obtaining a higher education must seem far out of reach. I believe a college student who is homeless upon entry or becomes homeless during college can graduate if they access the resources available to them.…
In 2008, when the stock market crashed, my dad lost his business, something he had sunk everything into. He was suddenly left with a wife and five children to provide for and no means of doing so. We had some savings, but they didn’t last long. Because my dad didn’t have a college education, it was nearly impossible for him to find work. He used what skills he had to work odd jobs, scraping together what little earnings he could.…
Two years ago at Santa Ana, I saw a homeless man on a curb next to a parking lot of ABC Supermarket begging for money. I pitied him and reached out 3 dollars in my pocket and gave him my money. He said,“God bless you” and gave me a distinctive smile. I remember to this day, seeing him so happy brought me such joy. The pleasure of helping an unfortunate man felt warming and rewarding.…
1. She wants, or yearns for, her own house more than anything else as the poem suggested. The old woman is thinking of having “a little house! / To own the hearth and stool and all!” (1-2).…
Extremely unsatisfied with this answer, I decided that I had to contribute to the spreading of awareness for homelessness. So, after talking with the main sponsor of National Honor Society at my school, we decided to organize an event for supporting the cause. The event came to be a Friday night on the coldest week of January, in which all members of NHS came out with cardboard boxes and sleeping bags, to experience what one night of being homeless truly felt…
